Had it on and off for a few weeks. Now it's there all the time, as soon as you turn engine on. It kind of fades in and fades out, fades in and fades out, every 1.5 secs or so. Seems to be down the nearside side of the engine block, about halfway down, not the top of the engine. I may be imagining it, but it seems to be accompanied by a very faint Darth Vader-like breathy roar from within the engine. Anything to do with the water pump?

...should have said, this is at idle. Don't know whether it changes with engine revs. I shall have to get someone to increase the revs while I have my head in the engine bay! Also, she is a 3yr-old 156 Selespeed with 48000 miles on the clock.

Water pump is at the cambelt end ... the driver's side of the car, as is the variator. At the other end is the thermostat (unlikely) and the clutch/gearbox.

The only othr idea I cann have is the noise is travelling through the engine making it sound like it's coming from there ....

Small crack in exhaust manifold?

Have you tried pinning down the source of the noise with a stethoscope? (otherwise known as a cardboard tube)

Hi

Bit of a long shot but on 2 cars ive known a similar problem, a 306 and a friends escort. Both times it was a cracked guard on the catalytic convertor, which made a wierd buzzy noise. Seemed to come from all over the place!

Also my 1.6 156 had a cracked exhaust manifold heatshield which made a similar noise also at idle. Worth a look?

Regards

Jim

Sillyspeed, does your car have the small catalytic converters just below the manifold or is it the older version with the cat below the car? If it's the old version, there's a bracket that holds the manifold flange to the cylinder block. Said bracket is known to split in two, making all kind of weird noises.

Hi Hoygs. I have the newer version with 2 cats near the engine. But I seem to remember at a previous service that a bracket or clamp had split and it was replaced. Maybe it has gone again? I'll check it out this weekend ;)
