Remapped 159 2.4 Failed MOT

As the title says it, had my first MOT this morning since I had the DPF/Remap, etc.. done last year. Failed with flying colours on emissions! (And also needed 2 new rear tyres, but that sort of thing is to be expected).

Limit is apparently 1.5, and it ran an average of 2.6... Guy recommended an injector clean (I passed a bottle of BG244 through it over a year ago), but I'm guessing they don't do the same (i.e. mix with ~1/4 tank or whatever and leave it running for a day!) - It's currently booked it for a look on Thursday.

Not sure how much that will help, but have a feeling the aggressive remap I had done isn't helping :( BHP was up from 208 to 254 after remap, Torque 343 to 460ft/lb...

Just an FYI really for anyone who isn't too bothered about economy when they go for a remap...!

I'll update this later in the week

Did your remap include an emissions check?

I get ****ed off with guys who don't do this, they remove and alter antipollution systems and don't check what the result is.

If this is done with the remap, it at least rules out the map as the culprit.
was it driven hard before the test and at full operating temp? ie a good 20 minute run before the test

loads of cars 'fail' and all thats needed is a good hard drive (ie bouncing it off the limiter in every gear again and again)

an injector cleaner may help, put a bottle in with 1/4 tank, then add normal diesel before the test.
Who was the remap done by?
Agree with CJRomeo, should not be remapping a car to an MOT failure

They didn't say anything about checking this, so I'm assuming not - just a rolling road.

It wasn't driven very hard no, so thanks for the advice. The test centre is about 10 minutes from my house through residential roads with a spurt of country roads.

I'm not sure what they would do as part of a 'clean'?

Would a better grade diesel help you think to run on this week before the retest? I usually use BP / Shell standard, but might be worth sticking some premium in beforehand.

Thanks guys.
Is that an Angel map by any chance?

I only ask as RobMSport had an Angel remap and went through a stack of bother a few weeks back with the same issue. Eventually he got the Angel tuner out to Autolusso where the MOT was being done and the guy tweaked the 2.4 map they use to blow lower on emissions. Mine was used as a comparison mapped 2.4 as it was at autolusso at the time (custom mapped by AHM) and I blew a 1.49 so this isnt mapped cars in general but the air/fuel/boost mix in the map. Not even heavily aggressive maps (mine is 267) are at fault, you can have power and it can be clean too!
Hmmm ok, thanks good to know!

Mapping was done at ProAlfa in Watford, although I'm not sure what map they use there.

Obviously I'm keen to avoid having to take it back there for it to be tweaked or whatever just to pass :\

EDIT: Actually I think that's wrong, think it was Red Dot Racing in Enfield. I was researching so many places at the time they all seem familar!
DPF delete with a good(Alfatune in my case) remap is no problem. My car passed with 0.82 with a limit of 1.5... And I run a lot(!) more power than most and have (among other things), no DPF, no EGR, no CAT and a straight though 3" 'tank barrel' exhaust system...

Your reading is so far off that I'm inclined to think something is wrong with your setup and it may not actually be the remap.

Actually, if it was done on a rolling road, and by red dot, they would normally have done an emissions check, so your problem may lie elsewhere.

I was thinking some daft file upload type 'tuner'

But phone and ask their advice in any case
Thanks a lot guys for all your input - I will give Red Dot a call on Monday.

I was watching him test emissions and when he was planting his foot it was making one hell of a mess! - But then I'm used to that with a big of a heavy foot action and from I've read here that's to be expected after a DPF removal...

The car is running perfectly otherwise and always has, so maybe a good clean out will help.

I will keep this updated.
To be honest, I used to get a smoke before I started the Rhino treatments and now I get none.

As Clogz said, it is most likely an underlying issue, like injectors and/or air filter affecting the burn.
RedDot know what they're doing and they've done enough of them, so you maybe have a bigger issue.

That doesn't sound right at all. When my car was remapped I got no smoke - only on full acceleration there was a slight puff of smoke once. After that it would not smoke no matter how often I'd accelerate hard.

When your car is throwing out black smoke the air/fuel mixture is off. I'm wondering if your tuner tested for soot but 'tuned' for the limit of 3.0 for the older diesels instead of 1.5 for your car....whilst ignoring the copious amounts of black smoke?

Did the car smoke before you had it remapped or only after it was mapped?

Very odd...
Agree black smoke means too much diesel in the AFR (air / fuel ratio).
No, never smoked before - And it does only do it with some serious welly / very high revs...
mine too failed MOT on emisions at a station I trust. Map was done by one of the original better places. Got through by:

20 mins drive with fast periods then steady on rev limiter, ie 3rd with foot on floor
(happens to be about 81 mph indicated )

got back to the station and went straight on then passed but the values were on the high side. the only thing I would say is I know my inlet manifold is coked up to buggery as the car was a commuter. Once it gets coked and the dpf is coded out and even blanked I can't see a way of clearing it out without taking it off and doing it manually. Not really a job I want to do. and don't really fancy treatments that take the gunk through the engine! I have since cleaned out the throttle body.
Thanks for your input alfacapone - can you remember what figures you failed with 1st time?

Currently I'm planning on running some cleaner through this week (although not sure how much I can get through as I don't use the car that much), giving it a good blast before the test (and hoping it's tested quickly), and speaking to Red Dot tomorrow.

Tempting to stick a big of rubber behind the accelerator to prevent full travel and lower the figures a bit :p
You can use your treatment in a more aggressive way if you run the fuel as low as you dare (light on at least) then add the full treatment to the empty tank, go run it hard at full revs until you're on vapour then fill up and add another treatment in.

Also, you can get a smoke reduction treatment to add to the tank. mine blew a 0.97 with a bottle of wynns in the tank at its last proper MOT :)

Bit worried about mine, it does chuff when I'm on 10 tenths. When you say full treatment what does that mean mate?
poor the full bottle of your preferred treatment (BG244, wynns etc) into a nearly empty fuel tank on the orange light. Then go drive on the red line till your on vapour, fill up with a fresh tank of diesel and add another full bottle of BG244, wynns etc to that.

The first treatment is a concentrated dose to try and clean a very dirty injector and the second bottle will help with the burn during the emissions test.

Also, put in a new air filter (K&N one is pretty good). You could have too much fuel in the mix because you don't have enough air getting through.

just my thoughts.
