A rattle has developed over the last few days, it’s loud, metallic and linked to any bumps in the road. Those with better directional hearing than me say it comes from the back. I’ve had a good look over and under everywhere but can’t find what is causing it. There is nothing obviously loose anywhere. I get a similar noise if I ‘ping’ the heat shields above the rear exhaust boxes but they are still fully attached.

Any ideas?

Make sure that the heats sheild is fastened in place and not sitting on top of the exhaust pipe. This has just been recified on mine. Wasn't an obvious one even on a ramp. See if you can lift it up with your hand.

This has cured my big knocks however there is still a persistent low speed knock coming from somewhere. Front suspension being checked now whilst all 4 wheelsare being aligned. Will let you know if anything is found.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've convinced myself it is the heat shields even though a quick prod around suggested they were still attached. Full investigations tomorrow, I'll post the results.

It was the n/s light cluster in the boot lid  A thump on the boot gave much rattling so with the liner removed and the light cluster taken out resulting in the rattle had gone. Looking at the light cluster there was nothing obviously loose but the noise seemed to come from the inner part vibrating against the outer casing. These units are sealed so cannot be taken apart. I drilled a few small holes here and there taking care only to go through the outer casing, and squirted some hot glue from my glue gun in and to seal the hole. Success, silence is golden :)

Good work! I can't stand rattles.

My car developed a rattle from somewhere in the drivers footwell while we were away on holiday. A really annoying tinny metallic rattle. Its my job to have a go at sorting that later...

Had the same issue with my Ti and it was simply one of the Allen screws coming loose in the metal clutch pedal - bit of Loctite and nipped up = no more rattle. Not sure if your car has these types of pedals but if you do its likely to be the culprit.

.... and the 'twang twang' noise from the back has been traced to the handbrake cable coming adrift from its bracket and hitting the suspension arm :) and the MOT guy said the rear brake hose had come adrift and was also hitting the suspension arm:rolleyes:
