hi all,

we live in Australia and had the gearbox oil changed at one of the Alfa's dealers in Brisbane (btw after a long conversation and answering questions why we wanted to have it changed). FYI - the other dealer advised they could not even see the gearbox (what a load of bull****!)

We were told the oil should last for the whole life of the gearbox.. so the previous owners did not have it changed at all - of course. Now, when the car has about 163,000 km, we had it done.

The trouble is that our gearbox has been acting funny, especially when changing gears from 4 to 3 and/or 3 to 2. We would describe it as a "bang" in the transmission - nothing else. Even after the oil change, it still does the same thing.

Do you have any ideas what it could be? it does not slip - you can just feel it has difficulty to jump to the lower gear..and then the "bang".

thanks so much for your advice!

No idea what sort of trans the 159 has,but in a torque converter type, servos, brake bands, clutch plates, pump, not functioning correctly?

Best bet is to go to a 'Slush Box' specialist in your area and get them to dianose the problem maybe? :):

These boxes are known for having some sticking solenoids issues.
The symptoms are those you're describing...

To correct you'll have to pay a big bill because the box has to be disassembled in order to change the solenoids, that aren't cheap either.
Apart the 'bangs' mostly in reductions, the box seems to work normally.

There is a known software update that fixes a number of issues with this gearbox including the issue of "slams" i.e the condition created when you accelerate hard then lift off just before the gear change. In this situation sometimes the revs hold for a 2 second period before it changes down and slams the high revving engine into the lower gear causing a horrible slam.

Other issues and torque limiters are lifted in the newer software update.

Go see a local Alfa specialist or main dealer with the FIAT Examiner tool and ask them to check if any updates are available for your gearbox.

If that does not fix it use MultiECUScan & a v1.4 OBD cable to reset the gearbox "auto learn parameters". Then their is a procedure you can follow to re-learn them. I have written it a few times in this forum and its long so get searching :)
