Hi,

After a long drive down to London ( From Manchester) half a mile from my destination the power steering pump developed a loud whining sound and the wheel shakes when turning.

Switched the engine off and the power steering fluid is bubbling over the cap?

Does this sound like the reservoir that needs replacing or the pump itself?

I'm hoping for the reservoir for obvious reasons!

After 8 hours, 3 breakdown vans and 250miles later it's back up North! Best MPG I'll ever get on the plus side!

Has anyone had experience of this problem? I'm thinking of buying annew reservoir and replacing that before I bite the bullet and buy a pump.

Please do a search as this is one of the most common problems experienced on the 159 and the there are literally hundreds and hundreds of threads/posts on the subjects.

Search is your friend!

No idea, I'm afraid. Have whining too, but think it's the auto oil that needs changing. Will let you know if I find out.

Busted return/check valve in the reservoir.
(Whole unit needs replacing.)

Can anyone confirm whether a replacement from Alfa is just the same as the old reservoir, or is there now a redesigned unit which doesn't suffer the problem any more? Part Numbers would be great as well.

Took the car into the garage and asked them to look at the reservoir. They reported back there was something loose rattling around insde.
So new reservoir from Mangoletsi £31 (sorry i dont know the code) and £30 for fitting including the fluid
