Before i bought my 1.9jtdm sw lusso the steering fluid reservoir was replaced and the fluid supposedly changed to Tutela g1/r at an alfa dealership 3 years ago, all itemised on the receipt. When i checked the level in the reservoir i noticed that the fluid was actually red, rather than the green i had expected. Looks like the dealership didn't use the correct fluid after all, or it was changed again subsequently. In a bit of a quandry now. Not sure if i should swap for the green stuff or leave as is. Steering works fine with no leaks or groans. Car has 114000 miles so am i risking getting leaks by changing to the thinner green fluid? Opinions appreciated.

The threads i have read on this state that the changing to red is where the problems occur, im not an expert but recently researched on AO and i seem to remember that the consensus was stick to the original, but if you already have red without issues then id replace like for like. ......However i would wait on 159 owners with experience for their opinions.

This is a question on my mind too. I keep getting conflicting info even from Alfa Specialists. I just bought a 2.2JTS on an 06 plate with 45k on the clock and the fluid is red. I too cannot hear any problems with the steering and the fluid is very clean with no frothing. However it does feel very heavy, i put that down to driving a panda for a week.

I read on here someone changed to the green fluid and the rack lunched itself in 4 weeks, so guys....what's the plan??

Carlb, how about you change your fluid for the green stuff and i wait to see if you have any issues? Only joking!
I'm really unsure what to do. I'd like to have the correct spec in the system but i'd hate to go the length of changing it only to have the rack die on me or spew everything out through the seals. When i looked through the old bills i thought i was quids in when i noticed alfa had changed reservoir and fluid. Couldn't believe it when i saw red fluid in the tank.
