Hi,

driving a BM 323i coupe (e36) at the moment, have been looking at changing to an early 166 recently (TS or 2.5). Really liking the idea!!
So just doing my pre-purchace research!!!:)

Thanks,

Dave

Just sold a T/spark 166 I had run for the last 3.5 yrs,now got an
02 plate 6spd.2.5.
They are really strong well built cars, good service history vital,
particularly t/spark.ensure it has never been run low on oil.other
main things ,cambelt and tensioner changes at 36k.and worn
front wishbone bushes.
I have to say that the 2.5 is much better than the t/spark,although
it has to be said that most of the owners on here are 3.0 litre fans!
Try and look for a 2002 onwards ,the spec. is much better, look
how much car you get for the money, very underated car and dirt
cheap!

thanks for the advice!!

unfortunately not many 166's on sale in ireland, and due to our c.c. based tax system the 3.0 is prohibitively expensive to run (for me anyway!!) Should be able to stretch to run a 2.5, but just want to get a clean well cared for car.

was thinking of something along the lines of this: http://www.usedcars.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=602637

are there any major model specific vices to look out for on a car this age & mileage?

The 166 seems like a hell of a good deal to me: Highly spec'd and, well, with that executive air to it. Pity they're so scarce in SA.

How's the performance with an engine smaller than 3.0 on this, though?

PS: Welcome Dave :D
