I've be negotiating the purchase contract with my local independent dealer but I have a few reservations about signing on the line.

A little bit of background information at this point would help you all understand my position. I live in Germany, Leipzig (World Cup city!) so getting hold of someone who knows a great deal about Alfas and can explain things in English is difficult here. My German is at a pretty good level, however some technical aspects are easier understood in one's native language, hence, my coming to this forum.

A few weeks ago there was a bad hail storm here which resulted in millions of Euros damage, the GTV that I'm looking at was also a victim of mother nature's wrath. There are around 60 dents on the roof, rear wings and boot and I have negotiated with the dealer that he should get these dents removed.

First question: What are the chances of removing these dents successfully?

Second Query:
The car recently fell victim of the infamous cam belt snap malady. This was repaired, however, the car tends to stutter on idle.

Second question: Is there a possibility that apart from a few replaced valves, there could be other damage causing this idle inconsistancy?

Third question:
The air-con wasnt working, what could be the cause of this?

Fourth question:
Are there any other things I should check and take into consideration before buying the GTV?

I test drove the car to a friend of mine who is a mechanic and he had a look over it, he noticed a few other things such as cracks in brake lines and exhaust on its way out. The dealer promised to repair all the things which would make it pass the TÜV (MOT test) so I cant really complain there.

Driving the GTV was amazing! If i had followed my heart, it would be sat infront of my house now and I would be asking for polishing tips!
Totally impractical, over-priced, as reliable as an England national team penalty taker, but fun, amazing fun!!! Help me get it!

Thanks

Is there any reason you need to buy this particular one ? '96 GTVs are now seriously cheap, and there are plenty around.

Hey Rusty

I have been looking for a GTV for a month or so and here in Germany, where I live in Leipzig, there aren't many at all.

The guy here asked for 7000Euros (4800pounds - 8900USD) for a 1996 GTV. Seems a little steep.

What price should I be expecting for one in good condition?

Id be very cautious after the belts snapped, there can be damage to the crankshaft/bearings as well as the top end, particularly if it happend at speed. There has been a number of posts on here relating to this, some mentioning that the bottom end only lasted 1000miles before giving up.
The a/c could be anything from a fuse or relay to lack of gas or knackered pump.

Simple answer really....WALK AWAY! Sorry but this needs too much work and the price (by UK standards) ir VERY high, even worse considering the condition. A similar spec'd car here would be hard to sell and would top 2k at best.

I had thought about buying a UK car but driving on the right side of the road with a right hand drive car is pretty annoying after a while. The novelty value would be great but it would be less than less than practical. But if anyone knows of a good deal there, or in fact anywhere, on a left hand drive GTV, please let me know.

I'm expecting a call from my local dealer tomorrow regarding this "overpriced" GTV, I'll tell him that Im no longer interested.

There's one more which is quite close to my home. Here's the link: it's in german but I think you can get the gist.

Tell me what you think.

Thanks again...

Right.

What about other things? Are there certain weak points on a car of this age that I should look out for?

Its from a dealer (Honda I think) so the price is a bit high. Im sure I could get it down a bit.

I normally get a friend of mine to look it over but as its about 60miles away, this time im on my own...

im not that knowlegable regarding GTV''s ...it will be worth your while spending a bit of time searching through some threads to get a feel for what to look for..with regards price...if you are not part exchanging a vehicle you are generally in a stronger position...dont be afraid and go in with a low price ..then dont say anything..let them do the talking..scratching their heads..see what they come back with...hold ur ground and look em in the eye...you'll be amazed how much you can get people down by

good luck

will do.
I have the advantage that they think I dont understand everything when the talk quickly (in German). And after help from the info on this forum, I can go in having a little more Ahnung (of a clue)!

Another question;i have been away from England for a few years now, do you know the good UK websites for selling cars?

They're about the same here, but I'd imagine Germany would be way cheaper, and I'd be expecting a perfect one for that money (or at least good nick for year)....
