Please help.

I have a lovely Alfa 147TS and have just hit a speedbump. Immediately afterwards my Motor System Control Failure light came on and my Alfa seemed to lose power and seemed juddery as if she had wet sparkplugs. The light kept flashing on and off but she feels underpowered and is juddering even whilst idle.

My husband is away and my mechanic is in hospital. What should I do? What could be wrong?
Will it be safe to drive her to another garage tomorrow?

HELP PLEASE!!!

Many thanks

When you say you hit it, as in at speed or you hit the underside of the car?
Is the fault still present?
If you hit your sump is it leaking oil, check oil level.

check oil level and check for leaks if okay look in trade directory for your nearest alfa independant dealer on top of this toolbar and enter postcode for nearest garage
i think it maybe your MAF sensor could have failed but needs checking out by a pro with ecu reader or someone close to you on this forum

this seems similar to a problem i had, but it wasnt caused by speedhump........does the fuel gauge drop to zero and yellow fuel light flash?
the problem was on my diesel gt...mscf light came on.....car ran very similar to what u describe, it was a problem with on of my inctector conections....which is now securely fixed with a zip tie

Gary - no, the fuel guage doesn't drop down and the fuel light doesn't flash.
I've since been out to the car again and she starts ok and the Motor System Control doesn't come on whilst she's idle but she isn't running right even when idle - sounds kind of 'juddery' but the engine itself sounds fine - revs ok. Oh yikes.....hope it's not going to be anything majorly expensive ........
thanks for your input thus far by the way

Check for oil leaks on the sump and keep an eye on your oil level :)

The plot thickens - just checked oil levels - fine - no oil leaks underneath the car overnight - started her up - absolutely running fine whilst idle - took her for a 10mile spin - running like the beautiful baby she is - no lights coming on or anything. She seems A OK again now. Could it have been possible that I rattled something loose whilst going over the speedbump and that it's righted itself?? Do you think I should still get her checked out? Should I still be worried even though she seems absolutely fine?? I love my Alfa more than anything! She was an Xmas pressie from my husband last year and this is the first time I've had a hint of anything going wrong.....thanks guys by the way - this site is brilliant isn't it?

I had similar problems when I first got my Alfa a couple of years back. Nothing untoward on the drive home over 60 miles, but then I went down toward Devon a few weeks later and it suddenly brought up the dreaded Motor Control Failure message just as I was booting it uphill and then promptly restricted me to driving below 3k rpm. It did clear but would come back intermittently over the next couple of weeks, sometimes staying for just a few seconds, other times a few minutes and then finally staying on for a week or so, despite there being nothing wrong with the control of the car. It was eventually traced to a problem with one of the lambda sensors near the flexi-exhaust. Since it was replaced, there's been no sign of that message since.

It could be worth just taking it one of the specialists to hook a reader up to...not that I want to imply something is wrong...

yeah thanks Speedracer I may just do that. Have located a highly recommended specialist only 10 miles away so will take it over there next week. I'm wondering if it wasn't just some water getting up inside the engine. There were deep puddles surrounding the speedhump that I caught - that's certainly what it felt like at the time - as if you'd driven a car through a flood and it went all stuttery.........the main thing is that she seems 100% this morning. I have even just given her an hour long's clean to celebrate! Sad woman that I am

The motor control failure can be brought on by any fault even a low voltage battery.

Yes it would be safe to get it checked out. :)

The knock could maybe have temporarily cut your fuel supply off because of the inertia switch may have activated temporarily. Otherwise no idea if all seems well

Happened to me a few months ago - hit bump, motor control failure and lost power. Pulled over and left car for 15 minutes and it then seemed to right itself. Diagnosis was a loose lamda sensor plug. Unplugged the lamda sensor wiring near the alternator and plugged it back in, cleared fault code and all has been ok ever since. Worth getting it checked out - the fault may be intermittant and next time you hit a pothole it may come back again.

Thanks guys - I have been told off for not leaving feedback. All was well but now the problem has returned but only whilst the engine is warm (ie after 20 or so miles) - she runs like a dream up until then. I have re-posted yesterday but thanks for all your help thus far on this thread!
