hi all, i hope someone can help, i had a problem with my maf and ran the car without one for about 2-3 days the car was fine at first but gradully it started to backfire more and more especially when cold, it got harder and harder to start but it was a little better when it got warm.
so gat a second hand MAF and put it on thinking it would fix everything, How wrong i was, the MAF made no differance and the car still ran like a pig ( the injecter light went off). so i kept it started for a while and i noticed the car exhaust was very very hot and it smoking from the metal near the cat.so i took off the cat but looks ok , i think.
could it be the lambda sensor thats now knackerd......................................Please help!!!!

If a V6 is running rough it's normally down to faulty plugs or dirty throttle body, if it was smoking underneth then I'd guess the flexi joint may be split, which itself can cause lumpy running.

When I had problem with my MAF the engine would not do anything else than idling rough...it was cured by clearing the error code with the laptop (Enginecheck LE) and messing with the contact of the MAF, then all was ok again. I thought something was wrong with the throttle but no. it was only the MAF that made everything...
Good luck!

the maf i bought was a genuine bosch one, i bought it from ebay as a used item , when i got it hat rust on the hot wire wich i cleaned and once the car started the injecter light went out but the engine still ran very rough. Does anyone know what problems can arise from running the car without a maf for a few days.

TBH that sounds like the condition of MAF I took off my car, problem is a V6 Maf is big money...If a MAF could simply be cleaned, why do people replace them??
Fitting a second hand item like a MAF is no guarantee of anything,
Disconnect the battery for a while to reset the ecu.
I had a similar problem recently to the swedish poster, sorry forgot his U/N.
I bought a fault code reader, which I believe (but don't know:confused: it didn't connect properly to the ecu, but did go through the first 3 stages of connection) cured the problem.
If you have a laptop, I'd suggest talking to sears about diagnostic leads and software.

I live in York.. Try getting it over to Bearings, they are an Alfa specialist in Leeds and have a very good reputation, I'm sure they'd be happy to look over it for you and give you their opinions.

So it wasn't replaced with a NEW item then and you've probably damaged it when you tried to clean it. Try a proper NEW Bosch MAF from an agent and not one of ebay.
