I've seen a few threads on this and yesterday managed to cure the problem on my Ph1 that's been with me since May.

Turned out to be really easy and just a case of removing the two hatches in the hood well to gain access to the top of the petrol tank. I had suspected a leak from the fuel pump / pipes but these were fine. Instead, the jubilee clip holding the filler pipe to the tank was a little loose and the pipe had slipped back a bit. I just put it back in place and tightened the clip.

The smell was intermittent but often strongest after re-fueling. However, even with a loose clip the tank would pressurise which surprised me when I found the fault.
