My wife has a 1.4 Turbo Multiair Cloverleaf (170bhp). As soon as she bought it at the dealer it had problems and had over £5000 of repairs to get it right under warranty...but its still not right.

Now its out of warranty and the car has developed a new sound, the engine sounds like a diesel. I thought it was the tappets or even fuel injectors. A local garage thinks it could be air escaping from the exhaust manifold. But after a bit of searching and youtube videos it sounds like other Alfa engines with a worn/bad variator. However I can't find this part for the Mito. So the question is, does the Mito engine have a variator?

PS the engine has just had its oil changed and I even have put engine oil treatment (for tappets) in it but still no different.

=== SOLVED ===
See post #13. Fault was a blown exhaust manifold gasket.

No variator in the multiair, by what you are describing, it could be a defect multiair unit, are there no faultcodes?

Hi BMP, just read this thread...
http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-mito/975690-mito-can-belt-change-cost.html
....and like you said the Mito does not have a variator.

The ECU light is not on nut I have not checked for any. The car drives and pulls fine, it just sounds so clatter like a diesel. Its louder around cylinder 1, exhaust manifold side end of the engine.

What exactly is the multiair unit on the engine? Is there a exploded tech drawing somewhere?

The Mito cloverleaf has a Multiair engine which is an actuator using the oil and an electronic control system. If this fails there will be a misfire. There are videos on you tube.

thanks for info guys, I've read the links and watched some vids on multiair and yes this how my engine sounds. So its starting to look like a multiair module failure. However there were a few posts about oil in the spark plug or even spark plugs coming lose. I'll have a look tomorrow to see if thats a quick fix. Otherwise how much will a garage charge to replace a MA unit? A new MA costs about £500-£600 plus other gasket parts etc, labour and VAT. Probably won't get much change from £1000.

Repair by a good known dealer or a independent italian car specialist wil take about 2.5/3 hours labor to do the job. :biglaugh:

I've had a check a cylinder1 spark plug, all looks fine, its not loose and there was no oil in there. However the elec plug for the coil on top of the spark plug is damaged. The little bit of yellow plastic to disengage the plug from the coil pack socket is missing/cracked. The plug seems to stay on due to the friction of the water seal around the head of the plug but can the Amphenol connector be replaced without replacing the WHOLE loom?

I've had a good look around the engine again with it on and the sound does seem to be coming from the exhaust manifold. Maybe the gasket has got a leak and its not the multi-air system. I just hope the manifold is not cracked otherwise that means a new turbo too.

So far the engine/car drives fine with no loss of power it that it just sounds so noisy. I does remind me of a air cooled VW beetle engine sound.

In case of a defect multiair unit you schould have codes,..... you can fix the electric plug temporarly with a tyewrap i have orderd the elecrtic plugs at alieexpress (originals)

5sets 1.5mm 3P car socket 284425 1 Plug ignition coil ignition connector coil plug car plug in 5 sets 1.5mm 3p auto socket plug 284425-1 bobine ontsteking spoel auto plug connector plugÂ* Â* Â* van Kabels, stopcontacten en adapters op AliExpress.com

But the shipment took about 3/4 weeks, the tyewrap wil hold.

Good luck with the Manifold :biglaugh:
Thanks for link. I did see some used Mito engine wire looms on eBay so may be able to salvage a connector that way.
Done some more investigation. The engine does sound like the air cooled VW beetle engine and its louder at the exhaust manifold. So it may be an exhaust gasket leak or a cracked exhaust manifold. Tried to spray soapy water to see if any air bubbles emerge but because of the turbo and heat guards I couldn't not do a good job of it.
Does the turbo bolt onto the manifold or is it an integrated manifold + turbo?
Plus some youtube videos on other Alfa engines show that it could be a lose cambelt ie adjust the tension and its fine.
The tappety sound is revs related. No ECU warning lights on the dash. Tappty sound does get drowned out the higher revs so while accelerating you don't notice it.

Quick update: the sound is coming from the exhaust manifold gasket, it has failed (which is good because it means its NOT the expensive multi-air system). When all the heat shields have been removed you can just about see the gasket material poking out of the corner. Its not loose suggesting the manifold is still bolted to the head tight. But it makes me wonder what the root cause is, the exhaust gasket is massive, it looks like it covers some of the rocker cover too so I can't see that you can put it on incorrectly. Anyhow the manifold will be coming off this weekend and hopefully its an easy fix with a new gasket.

See item 1 for the gasket

PS, found a UK source for the connectors which plug onto the pencil ignition coils

Problem solved! The 'Volkswagen beetle' tappet sound is now gone. The exhaust manifold gasket had failed in the bottom left hand corner (looking at the car at the front). I don't know why it failed, the manifold was fine, no cracks and the head was still flat when bolted onto the head....just unlucky I suppose.

So good news it wasn't an expensive multiair system but a gasket.
All work done by Go Italia in Maidstone Kent.

Approx. costs?

I currently have mine in for the same suspected failure (exhaust manifold gasket), do you mind me asking roughly how much you paid?
I appreciate it was a few years ago but just a heads-up would be great...…..I've seen the replacement gasket/heat shield fairly cheap but I imagine it's a labour intensive job?

Cheers.

Mine has the same issue I believe, do you remember roughly how much it costed you to get sorted?
Thanks.

Just checked my old receipts & was shocked to be reminded of the cost.........this was done at Alfa Romeo & whilst the part was cheap it was labour intensive removing a lot of the front end to get to so in total was £766!!!!
I think if this ever needs doing again I'll tackle it myself as the part was only around £40 but I didn't have a diagnosis at the time but would recognize it again in future.

Ouch!! Well thank you for giving me an idea of how much it’s going to be.

That was the price for taking it to Alfa, I'd imagine a local specialist could beat that price significantly. It did include a whole bunch of replacement seals & fluids when everything went back together but still a hefty wedge!..
