Good day everyone, i have been a long time lurker and usually found most answers for my troubles with my alfas through this amazing forum.

However, last week my 2.4 Jtdm 159 overheated on the highway (2 days after full service) and had it towed to the main alfa specialist in the country. Turned out some coolant rubber hose failed and all the coolant fluid broke free from the system and caused it to overheat.

Being relatively new to the 159 layout of the water temperature gauge (central console rather than in front of me) i didnt notice it go up and kept going for some time and blew the head gasket, the central cylinder and the cylinder head.

I am now faced with three options:
-Attempting to repair the broken cylinder and replacing the piston(s?), the cylinder head, the head gasket and valves (very $$$)

-Locating a used engine and just swapping the entire thing (~half the cost of a new one, but with risk it may have faults)

-Sourcing a brand new engine and be safe (if the 2.4Jtdm still exists brand new)

I am stuck with this decision, and i would love to have this forum's opinion on the matter :)

id be surprised if you could get a new one. your cylinder block will also need 'sanding down' (forgotten the proper word for it), as it may have warped when it overheated.

so in all id go for a second hand replacement. when you do, change the head gasket and timing chain before you put it into the car

Thank you tata :D

It was definitely a rubber hose that cracked (almost exploded to be honest). I will be rechecking the entire coolant system when fitting the "new" engine. I will also try and take pictures of the broken hose and it's location as to make sure this is not something that may happen to someone else :)
