I must admit I'm new to Alfas - but love my 155 - I've just checked my Oil level, seems to need topping up around every 1000 miles or so, and I've noticed Oil sludge in the expansion bottle -help!

Hiya Richie

Welcome to the forum :D

Sludge in the expansion tank usually means a problem with the head gasket. Have you got "mayo" on the oil filler cap too, try cleaning the expansion tank cap and see if it reappears.

I guess the head gasket has gone though :( :(

Which model is it?

:( Thanks guys - no 'mayo' on the filer cap but certainly 'mayo' in the water - I'll try cleaning the expansion tank and take it from there :

The car is a 1.8 8v 1995 wide body model

try this one..fill the water tank right to the top and start the engine hold it on 1500rpm and look in the tank you might see loads of little bubbles if you do the head gasket has gone although it sounds like it has anyway, this trick doesnt always work with oil into water but it always works with water into cylinders.
