Hi again guys

I recently had my engine (2.0 twin spark) replaced due to reasons below (see link)

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-spider/293231-engine-failure.html

I had an oil leak from the cam cover and had a new gasket fitted, That seems all ok now. However I am seeing some oil leaking from where the engine joins the gearbox. What do you think is causing the leak?

The garage (who supplied and fitted the engine) have said it is a big job to fix but not been specific. It could be main crank shaft oil seal so guess that is a big task?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

And mine. Jamie Porter told me not to worry about it and to just have the seal replaced when the clutch next needs doing. If it doesn't leak copiously and makes a mess of your parking space, then don't worry too much. Obviously, keep an eye on the oil level - as you should be doing anyway. I think of it as a rust preventative system that the car has cleverly devised of her own accord. Clever GTV! Keeping her floorpan safe. :)

Ok thanks for the advice. Is there any way I can minimise the mess to my drive way? Is there any job I can do from home to help 'seal off' the problem if I get the car up on jacks? Is there any chance this leak is likely to get bigger as I use the car day to day? Could to garage be responsible for fixing this leak as they supplied and fitted the engine?

The rear main crankshaft lipped seal can leak, as can de-lamination of the main bearings seals housing gasket. If it's gear oil then perhaps the gearbox first motion shafts oil seal is at fault? I hope you manage to sort it, and Jamie's sound advice seems to be the way to go for the moment? :):

On my 156, it started leaking a little bit of oil when I filled it too high after chacking the oil immidiately after a long drive. I added a pint, not realising the oil had not settled yet so when the oil level dropped to on the mark, the leak stopped.
