In the outside lane of the motorway today, engine just stopped working. Coasted to the shoulder without hitting anything. AA man takes a look, reckons it's the cambelt. Last done at 90k km. Was thinking it was about time to do it again at 159k. Its now outside the service centre, waiting for them to open on Monday. This could be the second 166 I've killed.

Our local service gurus are quite keen to fix it for an "acceptable" price. I suspect they have a spare engine somewhere waiting for a home, and it's in their interest to have a 166 still running so they can keep servicing it. An acceptable price is somewhere between zero dollars and the cost of simply getting another 166, which in the NZ market is about $6,000. It breaks my heart that because the re-sale value is so low, a perfectly good car becomes uneconomic to repair. Bloody alfas, it's still head vs heart.

Btw, the cam belt went at 159k km and had been replaced at 90k km, so that's about 38,000 miles.

sorry to hear of your mis-fortune

probably snapped because of age, its 36000 miles or 3 years

in reality, it's the number od start ups that determine how long it will last, going from zero to 600rpm in a nano second on the starter puts more of a strain on than flooring it it, which is more progressive, so a town car with many short journeys will need doing way before a car used infrequently but covering long distances.

SO the 3 years/36000 miles is just a fail-safe guess really.

[Mark is your motur a twinkle?]

It was a 3.0 V6. It is now an assortment of metal pieces.
The v6 cambelt change is still officially 5 years 72,000 miles I think. Bad luck man!

I sold a good engine for £500 2 years ago, which went to middle east (UAE) 166 owner.
Reckon even with shipping you could be in the money getting engine from afar.
