i bought im 147 2.0 sele a year ago it had the cam belt replaced at 45000 miles, but from the sound of things i dont think they replaced the variator (deisel noise on startup).
ive got another 30000 miles till the belt needs replacing again, is there any chance the variator could fail within this time? i dont want to have to fork out for a cam belt replacement thats not due!!

afaik, the variator will never fail in such a way to cause any dramatic damage

it can cause idling issue when it gets really bad.

What idle issues will it cause Pat?

Mines is rattling to the point I am thinking of doing it, even though the timing belt was done in Jan (allegedly) by its previous owner.

the idle can be irratic/hunting, not settling to 840 when you come to junctions
