I have just started hearing a noise from under the bonnet of my 2001 147 2L but only when i turn the headlights on. It doesn't happen with the parking lights only the headlights. I am guessing it is the alternator on its way out.

Does anyone have any other suggestions and if it was the alternator does anyone know how much a fitted replacement would be.

Thanks for your help.

it could be the height adjuster, one could be off its internal linkage & is 'hunting'

Yup could be the height adjustment motor/drive unit.

Do a thread search as this is a known issue.
Not too much of an issue.

Although when I read the title I thought it would be the noise of a light sabre firing up... Like the Passat advert :cheese:
(I spat when I typed that BTW):D

It will be, but you need to be careful as that noise is the motor getting hot as it's trying to turn. Best solution is the find the wire that goes to the adjustment motor and cut it.
