Hi everyone,just a few lines to introduce myself

My names Gary and I drive a Alfa 156 Turismo,its a 51 plate finished in Alfa red (the best colour :cool: ).We have had the car since 2003 and and up to now its only done 20056 miles and its never missed a beat,I was unsure about buying an Alfa after all my mates told me how unreliable they are well three years on and the only breakdown has been the NSR window motor packed up (warranty claim),all my mates have had trouble with there Marques in one way or another :D
My other hobbie is my Motorbike its a Yamaha XJR1300 finished in black,i ride it as much as i can which is usualy every Sunday

the M.O.T and service are due in October so looks like i'll be getting the belt done at the same time,

question for you,why is it done on age, as the milage is low would i be risking it if i ignored it say for another year,the car only does around 3-4 K per annum

Whats involved in the belt change and a rough guess at cost please

Hi 156. Welcome to AO. :)

Ignore what it says in the owner's manual. The belts and tensioners should be changed every 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever comes first. Expect to pay £3-400 at an independent specialist.

I assume the belts are changed on age as well as mileage because the rubber can deteriorate and go brittle over time.

The cambelt should be changed every three years or 36k miles whatever comes first. After that you are on borrowed time. The service manual probably still reads every five years or 72k miles, but the chance that the cambelt / tensioners will last that long is extremely unlikely.

There are lots of Alfa owners who needed a complete engine rebuilt because of a snapping belt before 5 years / 72k miles. Go to an Alfa specialist to do the job. Can't say how much the costs are as I don't live in the UK, but it should be doable for around GBP 400 (includes regular service)

Cambelt change??

My 2.4 JTD got to 60k earlier this year and my dealer recommended changing before 72k. He quoted me £750 to do the belt and 60k service. :(

Needles to say I got the parts from EB and had a local mechanic do it for about half the dealer price.

the 36k miles / 3 year interval is for the Twin Spark engine. The ones on the JTD last longer. But even with the JTD I wouldn't wait longer than 60k miles / 4 years though.

For info, on the subject of Cambelts, a chap at work with a 156 has been quoted £350ish for his 72,000 service inc Cambelt etc etc. No need to pay Main Stealer rates if you have a decent indie near you. In fact we haven't got much choice around us as there aren't any main dealers anymore.

He's planning to use some Alfa trained guys in Wolves (I can't vouch for whether they are any good or not - I'm waiting to see how he gets on ;)).

I got my belt changed at 48,000 when I bought the car. Wouldn't have used a main dealer had I been paying but it was part of the deal I negotiated for the car so didn't actually cost me anything :).
