Hi there I have just bought a 1990 S4 from a lady that was advertised here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231884153650?_trksid=p2055359.m2763.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It has the normal 2nd gear synchro problem and I was wondering what is the best non slip oil to help this and how many litres will I need? I realise I might need a gearbox rebuild but though best to try this 1st. Also I will be needing a new hood what sort of money are they and again where from? I also need an English owners manual if anyone knows where I can get one?

Thanks

Kev

Hi Barefoot, I just rebuilt the gearbox in my S2. The oil you need is Red Line 75W90 Gear Oil NS, make sure it is the NS (non slip) There is not much difference in price where you get it from, I bought mine through Amazon £19.08 a pack, you need two. IIRC I used 1.5 ltrs, put in a little less than the manual says will avoid (or help to avoid) oil leaks, especially where oil splashes up the selector tower where the gear lever fits. First time I changed the oil I used a syringe type thing and got oil all over the place, much on me! Second time I got a length of pipe which fitted in the filler hole, on the other end I fitted a funnel in the engine bay and gently poured the measured amount in, nice and clean.

Is that a workshop manual or owners manual? Forget the owners manual, hens teeth. If you would like a PDF version of the workshop manual send me a real email address by PM and I'll send it to you.

Welcome to the forum and Alfa ownership
+1 for the Redline stuff . makes second gear much more pleasant to use especially when its cold, its doesn't repair knackered syncro's tho,
I use Classic Alfa for most of my stuff but Alfaholics are similar along with a few other specialists you'll see mentioned here: never done it myself but hood fitting looks difficult and its not cheap to have it fitted, just use it for a bit and see if its an issue
The AlfaBB forum is a good place to visit too
Looks like a nice S4 and very low mileage - enjoy

Keep an eye on the rubber air intake over the rocker, looks like the prior owner has had issues and patched it with some bike inner tube or similar.

You can get replacements of these rubber intakes, as they do crack and perish.

gearbox takes 1.8 litres, but as ARB says 1.5l is enough and avoids excessive oil being sloshed about and possibly out through the rubber bellows on top.
If you plan to do it yourself, get one of these.....much easier! Get a 500 ml one and 1.5 litres is easy to work out;)

The redline NS oil comes in US quarts (0.9 litres thereabouts), so yes 2 needed.
If you want the best Workshop manual in paper form for the S4 spider, I got mine from a guy on ebay UK. (see ebay# 252337546167 for same)...It is basically the US version, but has enough info in there to allow you to pull the whole car apart (and put it back:))

as for soft tops, Coburn are supposed to be a top choice for the german mohair quality (for instance, EB sell them Spider mohair hood.1970-94)

I'd guess 300 quid to have it fitted by a good specific upholstery shop.

This company for instance says "from" 600 quid to buy and fit (but I guess that is for the cheaper top, and not taking into account say problems, like broken rear studs etc......which is very possible!)..but it gives you something to go on.
Car Manufacturers ETC - the Replacement Soft Top Hood supplier

Your spider looks nice. Congrats.

Hi, welcome to the forum. It does look a nice car.

I used a similar syringe to the one SpiderSeries4 highlighted and it worked well for me but I had a lift so access was good.
AlfaRed's suggestion seems a good one too. AlfaRed do you need to warm the oil to get it to flow well?

This is the crossover hose at Alfaholics: S4 hose to airflow meter

I paid about £700 for a new hood to be fitted. If yours is not too bad Renovo do some good restorative products.
