Hello im new to thie forum so im not sure what im doing,

I have just bought an x reg 156 1.8 t spark

The problem i got is when i first start my car it runs and sounds ok after about a minute or so when i rev over 3000 i get a bad rattle from the cam arear, if i switch off straight away and start again the rattle goes but returns after about another minute the car is also very under powered,,,

I have changed the mass airflow and disconnected the cam position acuator sensor and the rattle has gone and i have better performance but still greatly under powered. when put on an obd reader im getting no codes,,,

Has anyone ever had any trouble like this and can anyone tell me if it is just the sensor before i buy one as i was told it was just the mass air flow,

Any help would be fab

thankyou xx, im getting lost as i look around there are so many threads and i will defo pop over and have a look at the wales section once i find it lol

im hoping with the help of this site ill fix the power and rattle probs and ill enjoy the car more being overtaken by buses really isnt that cool lmao

If you're not getting any noise with the variator solenoid disconnected, I'd be concerned that the cam timing is incorrect, and would definitely check this first. The noise could well be valves kissing pistons: not good!

That would not explain why it comes and goes. Bad timing is bad timing. Noisy over 3000 rpm, loss of power, sounds likely the variator is completely up the duff. Any ideas about the service history? If you don't know when the timing was last done, have it done along with variator and water pump and have it done by a specialist who has the proper tools.

yeah thats the noise i got when the variator was way past its best, and completly dead.

starts off as a little diesel rattle at start up, then as it continues to die. the rattle gets worse and appears when the engine is revved to.

i dare say the maf is dead too, so a combination of the two, only thing is, to change the variator requires the cambelt to come off:thumbs:
