Hi im a new member here. I just have a few question about my 147 1.6 lusso.
1st when is the cambelt change due on this because from what I can see it has never been done and it a 52 plate with 57700 on the clock. I can change it myself becasue im a mechanic so how long would I be looking at taking to replace it?
2nd the gear selection is terrible in this car. It seems like there is far to much movement between gears and its very difficult to select 3rd and 4th gears. Would I be right in saying I need to replace the selector plate and bushes and remove swarf from the end of the gearbox? Thanks

no idea bout the gearbox, my mini crunches into 3rd and 4th but thats because i forgot to change the syncros when i reconed it.... there is a lot of play in my 147 gearstick too just got some getting used to :s.

If you try a thread search you'll find plenty on the timing belt interval
and the gearbox issue you describe.


(You are on borrowed time with the belt TBH. )

Robbieuk85 - you got the gearbox right, thats what i needed to replace on mine, but wrote it off before i got the chance:lol:

Yes that's what was in the manual for my old 147 :thumbs:
But it is now 60,000Km ( which is actually 37,282 miles, Alfa must be getting a bit more confident again :lol: ) in the manual for my '08 147 ( Ireland switched over to metric in 2005 )

Any idea how much the cambelt kit would be? Seems quite soon to be doin a cambelt 36000 but better safe than sorry! So is the belt difficult to do on these?

There are loads of threads on this if you search for it, but basically it's not the easiest ever. At least you don't have the balancer shafts belt and tensioner to do as well tho (1.8 and 2.0 only)

You need cam locks as well, to lock the cams in place while you change the belts. You can't just line up the pulley marks and go as it has a timing variator on the end of the inlet camshaft. The variator may want looking at too. If it makes any kind of "rattling" or "diesel" noise at start up you may as well change it. If not then leave it till the next change!

Plenty of guys on here have done their own but it's not much more expensive to take it to a specialist (assuming you know one who charges reasonable labour rates!).

Cambelt kit is around £70 for the 1.6 but NOT from the dealers! Try Alfa Workshop or EB Spares....for the cam locks as well.

Also you might want to check the water pump as well - about 40 quid and the impeller CAN warp on the TS ones. You can only change it with the belt off.

owners request i do believe, or when its noisy, dont think its on the service schedule

I believe AR! No mention of variator in the "Scheduler Maintenance Programme" in the Owner's Manual, just belts.
