Hi Guys,

My car (alfa 156 tspark 2L 16v 2000) had a engine knock so i took it in to my mechanic I was quoted nearly R20000 for replacement parts. he said it was the bearing and I had to re-do my whole engine.

my mechanic says the following parts need to be replaced

crankshaft R 2,240.00
bigends R 428.21
mains R 691.49
dekoke set R 1,531.02
oilpump R 1,406.12
rear main seal R 441.62
oil R 329.64
oil filter R 89.74
antifreeze R 140.00
cambelt R 644.60
cambelt tensioner R 1,799.20
auxillary belt R 553.08
auxillary belt tensioner R 621.99
Engineering: Fit smallends. Hone bores.R 680.00
Overhaul head R 1,200.00

A quick google shows 20K Rand is nearly £1700 - which is a bit on the pricy side for a rebuild, I would have thought, but he has quoted for a full rebuild, I guess. In UK you can buy 3 or 4 complete cars for that money.......and a second-hand engine is now down to £300 or so from many places - which is crazy, considering the rebuild costs, but reflects how cheap the cars are to buy.

If it was just a bottom-end knock I'd reckon you could get away with crank and shells, no need to remove the head so saving decoke set, little ends and bore hone and the head overhaul....but as the parts and the engineering work only come to a bit less than £1100 (about 2/3 of your overall cost) it may not be worth scrimping on parts of the rebuild if it doesn't significantly affect the labour charge which is about a 1/3 of your overall cost....

Wonder how much it would cost to ship an engine out from UK........

Thanks for your input..perhaps I should look at shipping cost for a second hand engine..Also need to consider the legalities of having an imported engine etc...

Can get a second hand engine for around R10,000 here in SA including labour will cost me around R13, 500 ..which is also another option my mac gave me..however when i went to a few spares shope they quoted me half of what he is asking for the parts. the dekoke set they quoted me R756 ex vat and my mac is charging me R1531...

When I ran a quick conversion of the prices they seemed a bit vaiable - some expensive, some cheap - although most mechanics will just use one regular place to deliver all their parts, and won't shop around - as that in itself costs.....

The only other point I'd make is that the charge for the crankshaft is presumably to have it re-ground - be aware that this isn't always possible - there isn't a lot of "meat" on the journals, so if it doesn't work you might have to source a replacement crank....

Oh and if you do go for the full rebuild, throw a new water pump in as well - false economy not to...
