Is the lever really loose as well or feels normal & just won't go into gear?

Could be this at the base of the gearstick

 

hm what do u think i should try then?

also - since i cant really reverse therefore not safe to drive it to my garage - what do u think i should do/contact?

im in the nottingham area

 

When mine went - I could get into third & managed to get home just using that (no doubt the V6 helped :lol: )

How 'handy' are you? , as getting to the part only involves nuts & bolts really & is cheap to replace

Am not saying it is deffo the problem, but sounds very similar to my symptoms

 

i probably am not very handy but did u use any other site to help u fix it? as if there are diagrams etc im sure i could get my friend who knows things like this to help me out. yes imagine i was driving back from birmingham in 5th gear all the way. didnt dare to go slower than 40 mph. thank god it was late at night and there were not much cars.

how much u think it would cost for me to fix it at a garage?

 

At a guess £150 ish

Part was only about £12, but there's a fair amount of time getting to it & replacing all the bits afterward - which would be a lot easier with the car up on ramps

Do you know a trusted local guy?

Did this 'suddenly' happen, or were you having progressive gear change probs?

 

it sort off suddenly happened. well i had problems getting into reverse gear, it always slipped out.

 

Sounds like mine then, I was going through McD's drive thru' when it happened

 

Any chance of doing a vid of how loose the lever is?

also the garage where i frequent is about 30 mins drive away. u think that would be good for the car? wil driving with this loose problem make the car any worse?

 

Can you only select one gear?

 

If you have recovery its worth ringing them and getting them to take the car to the garage. My recommendation would be to go to Lewis at Alfatechnico in Huthwaite.

 

i can select the top 3 gears now. none at the bottom.

yup i took my car to alfa technico for my first service as well. but its wel 30 mins drive from nottngham

 

1, 3 & 5 are enough to get you to a garage - there must be one nearer though?

 

more like this if you can't select gears though.

 

If the car is undrivable the recovery company will take you there.

 

EDIT Whoops totally misread the post.

 

hey, if i want to get a quote from a garage, does anyone know what the problem this is called in more technical terms? or rather what u think this needs replacing? rather get a quote rather then send it there to find out i'd have to drive it back and ask other garages as it may cost a bomb.
