Just reading through the cambelt horror stories and I had a though. Whats the worst mechanical thing that has happened to you while driving?

I have 2 to start with:

1. Bonnet comming up at 80 in an UNO.
2. Gearbox jamming and siezing on a very wet M6 at about 70.

I wish I had have had a camera for the first one, bent to the roof line!

Re: Nastiest thing to happen tou your car

:D Front brakes catching light on a Volvo 240 I had as a service vehicle.

..Twas on the M3 by Basingstoke, pulled over and put the fires out with a bottle of refrigerant, not very eco friendly I s'pose

 We never had any breakdown cover and I wanted to get home for my tea,so I drove it back to Southampton using the gearbox and handbrake to slow down......

..We never did find out what went wrong, cost a fortune to fix though......new calipers, discs, pads and master cylinder!

car on a trailer passing my husband and his friend.
Both looked over and said wow that looks just like our car,

oops it was, as it took off down the freeway past them:eek:

Luckily rolled right into a field where they hooked her up again.

 funny after but definitely not as it passed them.

(could have been real nasty)

i remember the day i passed my test, went to town with sister (it was her birthday) parked my little KA in a multi storey car park. went to reverse after shopping and turned the wheel too soon, and had battered the front wing with the concrete pole that was next to me. i cried all the way home because i thought my mum would shout at me! she did! and paid for the damage! £1000 worth!

Nothing #fingers crossed# has happened so far to my Juliette. My old Metro got subjected to something rather nasty after it was traded in as part exchange....

.....she got crushed!!!!!:(

Worst I reckon was when I blew chunks out of the block on a volvo 740. You could see straight into cyl 1, 2 and 3.

Bloke used an Uno to stove in the whole driver's side of my Metro about 18 years ago. He had quite good judgement, really!

Cinq blew the seals on the turbo, looked like something from the Red Arrows with the blue vapour trail behind me!

driving down a very dark road at night with it pouring with rain and all of a sudden my radio went off, my wipers started to slow down and the headlights started moving closer to the car as they dimmed:eek:  just managed to pull into a layby before i lost all lights. i managed to pop the bonnet but couldnt see a thing as i had no torch and it was pitch black, i assumed it was either a loose wire somewhere or loose terminal on the battery but as i couldnt see anything i didnt fancy 'feeling' what was wrong:D so had to call the AA, the 'very nice man' arrived with a bloody massive torch and promptly told me the positive connection on the battery was loose, which he fixed in about 5 seconds, needless to say i gave the garage who had serviced the car the day before a very large piece of my mind and never took another car anywhere near them:rant:

i did get stuck in 8th gear in my truck on the M5 near bristol one night and managed to get all the way back to my yard in northampton, the only tricky bits were timing it through the lights off the motorway at jnc 15 and onto the industrial estate and into my yard was fun as i had to stop to swipe my pass then start off in 8th which the clutch didnt like much:lol:  fortunately i was empty

Steering shaft parted company with the rack on my old Hilman Imp......luckily only doing about 30mph at the time! (later the gearlinkage snapped off and finally burnt 3 exhaust valves on the A1)

Once ran over a full exhaust system lying in the outside lane of the M6..smashed the front offside and rear nearside wheels..

Stepped out of an artic truck not realising it was still in first gear....got back in time to avoid missing the hedge (bailing at the time)

Early Beetle caught fire in Lincoln...luckily smelt the fumes through the heating system as the heat exchangers burnt through first..

Got pushed onto an island by an artic truck as we both negotiated a roundabout off the M5...smashed front wheel and lost lots of trim.

Brick flew out of the gap between the tyres of a aggregate truck I was following (saw it just before, but could do nothing) smashed the grille, windscreen and left a trail of dents on the roof..

Plenty of problems on motorbikes.......like the time my brother and I ran our sidecar oufit into a righthand ditch and shortend it to half it's length...

had a rover sd1, the v8. traveling on the motorway at 80 mph, the bonnet opened suddenly. on the sd1, the bonnet opens forwards. unfortunately, aerodynamics pull the bonnet up, and you're totally blind ! my sphincter was twitching that day !!

put my chevette off the road after a steering failure, went 30 feet down a verge, between two trees, which could only have been a chevette's width apart ! hit a ditch at the bottom. the car bounced in the air, and landed upright. a fencepost came through the floor missing my leg by millimetres !!

my capri, and my chevette both had the famous habit of the gearstick coming off in your hand !

Bonnet embedding itself in the windscreen and roof panel on the motorway... Luckily it was 3am and no else on the road other wise I would have the person in the car behind suddenly sitting in the back seat, funniest bit was what my mate said when we got out to survey the damage...

AND I QUOTE....

"Tom, You Have lost your badge mate..."

for all other things there's mastercard eh!

Old Ford Falcon - took it to a carburettor specialist to get fixed. They fixed the carbie but didn't close the bonnet properly. Bonnet popped open at 30mph as I was driving out down the street. Funnily, they tried to blame me because I hadn't checked that the bonnet was closed properly!

Toyota Crown (I was young and had no money). I inadvertedly left an oily rag on the exhaust manifold. Yep, she caught fire whilst I was driving.

OH! I forgot to mention the time that I tried to be over cautious! Reversing my brand new pug 106 into a space when the wheels caught on the kerb.. Thinking it would be a good idea, I opened my door to watch the gap between wheels and kerb.. Then crunched the open door into a tree. .Ouch!
Racing someone off the lights in a R5 GT Turbo.. With the handbrake still on...
Yes I really should take the bus from now on!
