just suffered a mysterious engine cut out this morning 5 mins after setting off. I had to park up, take key out and then it started again but showing engine warning light and advising to "get engine checked". 2 hours later on starting again warning light and message mysteriously have gone. Should I carry on as normal or get this checked out??

You'll need to get it checked, or plug it into FES software to get a proper diagnosis. In the absence of any horrible grinding noises, it could be a cam position sensor failure or similar sensor issue. I had this happen on a previous car. The sensor reads out of range all of a sudden, and then effectively crashes the ECU. The error will clear when you restart, as the sensor now reads in range.
