My "TI" lookalike project and some recomendations

20791 137
I just thought I'd take a moment to share my recent modifications and recommend some parts and suppliers.

I bought my 159 1.9 JTDm Lusso about three weeks ago. It was exactly the colour combination I wanted (black bodywork with biscuit/natural leather) and it had FSH, 112,000 miles. I paid £4800.

However, I had seen a lot of pictures of the 2.4 Ti models whilst looking around and LOVED the look of the larger wheels and lowered suspension so I started looking around at aftermarket bits and bobs.

I found a nice set of 19" TI alloys (with Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres) for £675 locally. I fitted them to the car but of course the car looked a little silly - it needed to be lower.

I looked for lowering suspension kits on ebay and found these on ebay for £229. I wasn't 100% sure about buying an unnamed brand but thought I'd give it a go. If the shocks were rubbish I could still use the springs. When the kit arrived I was very pleased to see FK markings on the springs and shocks! They all had FK code numbers on which corresond to the FK suspension kits on sale for a lot more than £229! The shocks and springs are now fitted and the car sits perfectly on its new wheels. It also rides very nicely. Not too firm, just surefooted and reassuring. Not crashy or harsh like other aftermarket suspension I've had in the past. Perfectly livable with. I'm very happy.

I looked around for TI skirts next to complete the look. I found a couple of breakers who wanted far too much for skirts and then found this supplier on Italian ebay. They arrived quickly and are a very snug, neat fit. They're plastic (not fibreglass) and my local spray shop said they were great. Not bad for £124 a pair. They're costing me £60 to get sprayed and I'm picking them up this Saturday.

Once the skirts are fitted (along with a pair of nice chrome mirror backs and some nice TI badges I picked up) it should look the business.

I'll post up some before and after pics tomorrow. I'm very pleased and the car looks so much better now than before. Very smart without looking "kitted up" or chavvy. Like a TI that just rolled out of the showroom. Well nearly....

Do you mind me asking how
much your 'TI' badges cost? (PM me if you like)

The red parts of the badges on mine have 'crazed' slightly with very fine white lines, making the red appear to be an unfortunate pinkish colour!

Any other TI owners seen this? The Q4 badge has done the same thing.

Just a few more pics of the car today in York at the Alfa Romeo Owners Club event.

We went up on the Saturday, stayed at a Premier Inn, parked the car up in the town centre this morning amongst all the other Alfas and spent the day wondering around York in the sun. Perfect. I think the 159 looked pretty good too...

Here's a few pics...

lol - It wasn't just exotica and classics. There was a load of modern stuff as well - Breras, 147s 166s etc... A really good day all round.

Right, today is skirt fitting day.

Has anyone got any tips about how to fit aftermarket skirts to a 159?

I've been looking around at replacement rear exhaust sections to replace the rather feeble looking thin single tail pipe on my car.

Can anyone tell me what the twin tailpipes on the Ti are like. They look round, slash cut but I'm not sure about the outer diameter. Does anyone know if they're 3" or 3.5"? Also, how far do they stick out from the rear bumper?

If anyone has any ideas it would be really helpful.

Thanks

Hi Persky

Car looks great mate. I've got a lusso and would to do this to it.
Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the mirrors and ask where you got them from?

Also, my car is a 2.4 JTDm so came with the dual chrome exhausts, I can get you a picture of them if that will help?

Cheers

I paid way over the odds for the mirror backs. I bought them from Veloces in London - here is a link.

Alfa Romeo Part Shop : Mirrors : Alfa 159 : DOOR MIRROR - £99.00 from Veloces of London

You can get them about half that price I've since learnt. Do a search for chrome mirrors and you will find a few threads and the Alfa part numbers. They seem to be available for about half what I paid. Not one of my better buys.

Yes please a pic of your exhausts would be great. Would it also be possible to let me know the diameter of the tailpipes please?

I'm too ashamed to take a photo of my tailpipes, as they currently look like a tramps nether regions

BUT A quick measure revealed the external diameter to be just over 3 inches (so nominal 3 inches then), and they don't really extend past the body work lip on the inside edge.

Hope this helps. :)

Excellent project ... great result. Quick question ... would the lowering kit work with standard 17 or 18 inch wheels ? ( if you just wanted to lower the car a bit for better appearance ) I always think my 1.9 JTDm luuso looks too "high" .. :)

Yes I'm sure the lowering kit would work with any wheels you have. I ran my car for a couple of days with my original 17" wheels and the new suspension kit on. No pics though unfortunately.

@Palmer88 - yes please!
