My 156 decided it was too cold and windy up in newcastle last night and set itself on fire in the carpark at 5am in the morning!

i was half waken up by the non stop car alarm screaming, thinking to myself, whose bloody car is it. got up, looked out of the window, couldnt believe my eyes. i literally had to slap my wrist and check that I wasn't dreaming.

Looked like it's an electrical fire, battery ( less than 2 year old, plus new alternator 4 mouths old) was completely burnt out, so was the headlight. got to give a thumb up to the alfa alarm tho. still screaming for help for 5 mins after the fire fighters cut out the wires.

Certainly seems to have started in the battery area. Tragic sight. How long had the car been at rest?

The headlight wiring hanging down looks pitiful (sniff). Keep us updated with the insurance offer.

The very best of luck to you

Thanks guys, the car was parked up for about 6 hours before getting ablaze

funny enough, the fire looked exactly the same as this guy's
Alfa Romeo on fire - YouTube

car now taken by insurance for further investigation, but looks like i wont get a courtesy car till tues.

Now recalling my last drive home, 14 miles journey, the stereo got a bit funny, one minute there was no sound on the driver side, and then came back on, same happened to the passenger side, went on about a couple of times, and that was it.

a sign of electrical fault may be?

beautiful looking car she was

I bloody hope crap, crackling and cutting out speakers aren't an indication of impending, sudden self-immolation - that's about 80% of 156's goosed then.
HAHA. To be honest, that was the first time speakers going funny, I have not modified the speakers myself and just a normal JVC cd mp3 player. I highly doubt that the previous 50+ lady owner, who had the car from new, would have done anything to the stereo wiring either.

Registered the claim this morning, and funny how the operator 'warned' me that it's very unlikely that the car can be fixed. WAT? NOOOOOOO!! :wow:

In regards to the courtesy car, i am with bell and paid extra for 'like for like' option, and FYI in the event of fire, its not covered by this extra optional package, so enterprise class A vehicle it will be:

Bloody Chevrolet spark 1.2. oh. joy.

Got to be an electrical cause...virtually impossible to accidentally fire diesel......

Sorry for your loss - at least if they are paying for a hire car they'll make you a quick "write-off" offer - so start building up your dossier of the price of equivalent replacements now, to counter the derisory offer that is almost inevitable.
