Its almost a year since I traded the 147 for the GTi. The reason right from the start was to get a 4 door hatch that’s fast. At the time Alfa didn’t cater for such a market, and I was eager to get into the “software” tuning game, to feel what it was like.

It comes with great sadness that I say this, but I’ve made a moerse mistake! I should have waited and bought a 156 GTA as was my plan B from the start. I initially went to Chatz and had the Dep with me for a GT! I was dead set on driving away with a 3.2 GT. They did not have one in red nor did they want to give me a good trade for my 147. I left completely dismayed and the car veered off into the VW dealership.

Many who know me will know I absolutely hate VW, but when I sat in the backseat of the GTi it just dawned on me…this is perfect! A turbo hatch that can be tuned and I can carry the baby and wife’s luggage easily, plus it had 4 doors.

Long story short, this has been a year of mixed feelings on the GTi. It is by far the best car I’ve ever driven for what it was bought for, meaning, it did what it was supposed to do, but it never had that connection with me…that Alfaness! I never wanted to get out of the bed at 3 in the morning to go drive it, I did it a couple times with the GTi but this was just to test the modifications I’d done on the car on open roads with no traffic.

As time went on I became used to the power that was bourn from all the mods…to date I’ve spent close to R35000 on mods alone, and I can almost be 100% sure that a GTV and GT 3.2 will sit with me until 140kph…after that is when the car is a beast, but who races past those speeds anyway? My dad always told me that the GTi is a waste of money and it’s a bottomless money pit! It has never broken, not once! It only left me stranded at my flat once due to the dealership who broke my oil cap and the oil spilled out…other than that I’m sure most of us agree that this is a good all round car, that probably why so many sheeple buy it. When I would visit my dad the 1st thing I’d do is ask for the V6 156’s key and just start the car, we’d talk for hours about Alfa’s and we could never do that with the GTi…yes I have tons of TLGP stories but my dad was not interested, he was more interested in Alfa stories!

On a weekly basis I’d find myself searching the online classifieds for GTA deals and found one or two but could not get to actually buying an Alfa. My desktop always had an Alfa on it, never a GTi. One thing I’ve learnt about this boy racer scene is that it’s a bad scene to be in, it’s a scene that demands money, it’s a scene that has unscrupulous characters in it and there were always stories of this one doing this and that one doing that. I’ve decided before my 2nd daughter was born that I don’t want to be involved in that scene anymore.

Now that the GTi is almost stock, bar a DP and software, I’m on a mission to get it sold and then searching for an Alfa that will tickle my fancy! The problem is once you leave the brand and start to itch again…you want ALL the models! I’m just empty without an Alfa…yes the GTi has fulfilled its goal by introducing me to the street racing scene and the software tuning scene, but there is more to cars than that. That is where an Alfa comes in, where an Alfa fills the void! My goal is to have a yard full of the hottest Alfa’s in town…not for other people’s pleasure but for my own, the night that I wake up to go for a spin in an Alfa is surely coming soon!

ALFA FTW!

Well I sold off most of the parts but of that 8k was for tyres and I need two more!

It was a good run, I know now how it feels and I will say I enjoyed myself with this car but as said something was missing...only Alfa people will know what I mean!

Nice post.
You know that you could have had an Alfa v6 turbo for the same amount you had to spend on the GTI for more performance.
I really hope you get the one you want.
If you are interested I will still post picks of my GTV but although I bought her when she was only 6 monthes old with 15000km on the clock she is still a code3 and that will definitely be a deal breaker for you.

Well put! My eyes have been wondering lately, but while there are better cars out there than mine I just can't imagine a car I would prefer owning.
A few months ago VW was talking about buying Alfa, I shared this news with my brother, and his response summed it all up; "Maar nou wat de f*k moet ek doen, n viets ry?!"

You've hit the nail firmly on the head Guili!

I've owned and driven a number of interesting cars over the years, but the only car other than my GTA which I bonded with instantly and totally was a scruffy 10 year old full race Lotus Super 7 back in the early 1970's.

I've now owned my GTA for 6 years from new, and I love it :). To date Alfa have yet to produce a credible replacement, and I hope & trust that they will continue to provide full agency support for it... Its already an Alfisti classic!!

Love it!It's because you got the G back knocking some sense into you. Please knock some sense into my dad with his gti VI

I can't ride a bike anymore. My uncle and I broke away from the VW SCENE with the same car 20 years apart.

That's why its a VOLKSWAGEN the people mover. Fast or slow it's just a mover.

So all this VW sh!te you have posted during the last year was to try and convince yourself, not to help god-fearing Alfisti onto a german auto-bahn leading to hell??

Once your got brake-fluid on the brain nothing can save you, you will again lose the road and veer off into the darkness of chips, down-pipes and roller bearing turbos. Even assume a name to the likeness of Turbo/screwed/crazy/nutters? But we found pills for that, unfortunately also at the bottom of the money-pit.

My advice to you is to find your GTA, only let your wife drive it. That will save lots of money and only allow a dealer to open the bonnet.

Buy 145/7 scappy and start a track-day car project. Fit it with shocks, tyres and a cage and do not touch the engine until after you have done 24 track days. If you asked the right questions and done your bit you could be 5 seconds quicker than the day you started with the same 76 wkW. You will very possible beat a lot of 140 wkW 3.2s, but that is not what you try to achieve. You will every time compete against your own times and you can not buy driving skill from any chip-tuner.

This will keep you in the garage for lots of evenings and will do a lot for the kids school-fund without you missing out on the monthly adrenalin rush.

Giuli, as nice as it is to drive in a faultless car like the Jetta, I found myself wondering why I bought it again and again. I should have bought a 156 v6 for a third of the price instead. They both do the same thing, except I feel no fizz in my gentleman's parts (to paraphrase a certain Englishman) when I drive it.
I am seriously contemplating selling it. It is immaculate (except for 2 chips) and only done about 10k mostly long distance commutes since I bought it 11 months ago.
I get in the Alfa and I remember everything that is good about driving - the highways, trees and mountains lit in that special 6am in the morning sunrise way, the smell of leather and slight whiff of petrol fumes passing through missing firewall grommets, birds singing just for you and people literally going from preoccupied and on the brink of road rage to beaming when they see you at the lights. I imagine that this must be what owning an Italian exotic is about while still being accessible enough for anyone from street people to Franschhoek's crowd asking questions and telling stories about how they raised hell in a car just like this.

It's great to see you publicly proclaiming your love for Alfa on here again! I remember the not-so-old days when Lance was responsible for most of the posts on the alfissimo site, all of them asking about more POWAH and reading his news24 reader's test of his Giulietta Reader test: Alfa Romeo Giulietta: : Road tests: Reader tests . Then there's his handle on the gticlub site. There's few people I've met who are so enthusiastic about the essence of the brand in a fun way. Most guys I've met love the brand, but in a serious way, whereas Lance's enthusiasm is infectious!

If I was Alfa, I would have given Lance free cars and all the Peroni's he could drink to be the local brand ambassador!

Aaahahahahhaa...I like to toy with the idea of me building a race car, but in my current marturity at age 25 does not allow for such patience!I know I'd be a dedicated Alfa builder and Ill go late nights perfecting my racecar, but for now in my current season of my life...no.

@El lol tjoon that to Arnold Chatz or any Alfa dealer out there tell them Ill take a GQV in white, all chrome accents colour coded gloss black with KW coilovers and Autodelta kit and 19" BBS CH's in gloss black with FR&R tune and wildcat DP and ITG CAI! Lol...I can remember those days when I was passionate about Alfa! But the racism I experienced In MP club I started and the old issues that tainted the ARCSA club, luckily its sorted now and theor website is great, maybe that added to my. Loss for Alfa love. But atleast I ventured out and felt that I needed an Alfa. Don't get me wrong, I'd still love to own an E36/46/90 M3 in my lifetime!
