Ok Lads, i really need your help now, as im about to break down and cry if i cant get this sorted! I have multiple questions / statements that i hope you guys can help with.

I currently own a 2001 147 selespeed. I have owned it for about 3 months and all i have had is problems. The current problem is that sometimes the car will not let me select any the next gear (up or down) and will slip into neutral when i am not moving. I am a complete novice at Alfa's but luckily I have an amazing Alfa specialist near me who has been helping me, and i have been reading this forum non stop for the three months i have owned the car.

Before i go any furthur, i want to say that my local specialist is Duncan Slade of Alfanet in Bristol. He is the greatest guy ever, he has helped me non stop and is the absolute god of Alfa repair. If you live anywhere near Bristol, make sure you give this man your custom.

Ok, back to the car. Duncan has put the car on the examiner and it is showing no errors, on the previous times i have had this problem we have been able to reset the selespeed transmission and the car has worked for another couple of weeks, now the car will not reset.
Duncan has said that it is most likely the actuator, but he cannot be sure.

Other errors i have encountered (just incase they help):
airbag light came on for no reason (i have had it reset now)
always get rear fog light error (comes and goes randomly)
got the error motor system control failure for one day.

Ok, so thats the background, here are my questions.

Any ideas what could be causing the problems?
If it is the actuator, where is the best place to source a cheap (cheaper than new) one?
If i diddnt fix the car, what would it be worth in the condition it is in?
To help on the last question, i paid £2500 for it, it has 70,000 and lots of extras, like ipod adaptor, and the sport leather seats (with the red stitching) if you search in the sales section, you will find it. Nice red one with pictures next the water!

Thanks in advance for your help guys, i really appreciate it, if there is any more infor you need just ask, i will keep checking the posts regularly.

I would think that from your initial problem, not selecting up or down that you may have a loose plug, but does that happen on the steering wheel buttons and the stci or is it just on one of them?

If it's both then it's probably not the wiring, but the clutch release rod going out of limits, this can be adjusted back into limits quite easily and Duncan should know how to do that, and as backup for this theory as it approaches the limit, you can often recalibrate it on Examiner without having to touch anything else and the problem clears. Otherwise one of the valves may be failing or even the most simplest answer, the oil level is low. If you've not had a new battery then I'd suggest that too as they are sensitive to dieing cells and the electronics in the Sele ECU are very easy to confuse.

P.S. if this problem persists, then I shall be living near Chippenham from Dec. if you need more hands on help.

Jesus, i knew you guys were helpful, but i diddnt think i would get offers of a call out! lol.
To answer a few of your questions: when i get the problem i cant select gear by any means, and i have even tried driving in city and it will still get stuck in gear sometimes, and then will finally get into another gear a minute or so later. As for the recalibration, everytime we try that it stops with an error after it bleeds the clutch.

I have just remembered some more information that might help, it doesnt make much sense to me and i might get bits wrong, but i think it might help diagnose the problem.
Duncan was trying to explain about how the system works and was talking about pressure. He said that when the system drops to 35bar (is that right?) the pump kicks in and brings it back up as it should - however, he said it is only bringing it back up to 40bar instead of 55!

As for the battery idea, i asked duncan about that a few days ago and he said that couldnt be the cause of THIS problem, and i have looked at the battery before and noticed it seemed to be pretty new.

Any ideas on my other questions? where to get an actuator or the value of my motor in the state its in? if anyone fancies a project let me know!

P.S if there is any help i can offer to anyone in anyway (not sure how as i am a total novice) i would be happy to help.

Well all I can add is although the battery fitted to our Sele' was virtually new, it was of the wrong amperage. Fitting a new correct amp one, no more problems. There a numerous back posts on this, Ben B's repairs on the Sele' system are really comprehensive and in depth. Worth checking out?:):
