Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere before: there is an interesting article on the BBC website today on the failure rates of every car MOT tested.

BBC - Open Secrets: MOT failure rates released

there is a downloadable spreadheet which gives all the figures for example:

Make Model Passes Failures Rate
ALFA ROMEO 146 2,226 2,632 54.2%
ALFA ROMEO 156 28,232 17,616 38.4%
ALFA ROMEO GT 714 242 25.3%
BMW 316 Total 67,741 41,636 38.1%
BMW 318 Total 119,281 69,409 36.8%
BMW 320 Total 72,742 30,540 29.6%
BMW 323 Total 22,125 12,595 36.3%
BMW 325 Total 34,162 16,639 32.8%
BMW 328 Total 16,502 9,558 36.7%
BMW 330 Total 33,654 10,353 23.5%
FORD FOCUS Total 603,725 202,179 25.1%
FORD MONDEO Total 451,992 297,998 39.7%
PEUGEOT 406 Total 139,777 89,099 38.9%
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 475,463 240,478 33.6%

(sorry about the appearance of the table above, but you get the idea!)

You do need to use caution in looking at the figures as a failure for bald tyres is not really the problem of the car manufacturer; It may however say something about how owners of particular brands look after their cars!

There are NO Fiats or Alfas in the top thirty-four! I think Peugeot 206s are massively overrated. Why are they so popular?
