Bit of a moral dilemma, discovered a suspected head gasket failure on my GTV V6, obviously a huge bill to fix therefore I’m faced with 2 options
1 – Sell as scrap / Part-Ex / Auction (£500)
2 – Sell as a classified without disclosing the potential failure. (£2-2.5k)

I know generally it should be a case of buyer beware, but I know how gutted I am when I buy a lemon (almost spent the purchase price fixing faults to get this GTV through its first MOT)

What would you do?

I'd fix it and keep it. If I wanted to sell it, then I'd tell the new owner after first confirming that it is indeed a failed head gasket.

Not 100% sure its a head gasket, hydrocarbons in coolant, no crude on filler cap. Engine drives perfectly!

I pose the question as it troubles me, I wouldn't consider placing the car on the classifieds here on this site, however a site such as ebay is an auction site, vehicles are sold as seen. I would have very little issue with forgetting to mention it if I were to Part-Ex the vehicle.

Having owned numerous cars, I'm wise enough to know that sellers don't always confess known issues/faults. Indeed my GTV required £1500 of suspension work to pass an MOT only 2 months after buying from a dealer, they may have been totally ignorant of these faults but I doubt it.

According to eBay rules the item must be as described and if the buyer were to find this thread I'm sure they wouldn't have too much trouble winning their claim against you.

I'd tell them I think, if it does come down to a choice of scrapping or selling give me a shout I may be interested as I will be looking for a project in the next month or so.

if your in the UK surely if you bought a car from a dealer and it needed that much work at its MOT then you could claim against the dealer?

I'm not sure about the "buyer beware" over there in the UK but If the goods fail to be of merchantable quality then the buyer has recourse to the courts and can get there money returned or if they wish to keep the goods a portion of the price returned .. so yes even though its fleabay there are rules , and as said I would hate to pay full price for a car thats a lemon
