iTunes Store is in threat of closure due to the shallow pockets of the MPAA. If there was ever a greedy, selfish institution it is this one. They are forever shamelessly, and publicly, thinking only of the money that can be made from letting people listen to music. Now they are asking that iTunes pay a 66% hike in royalties, that Apple do not want to pass on to the consumer, and therefore threatening iTunes closure. Do the MPAA care about this, and the fact that less people will be buying and listening to music? I doubt it.

The fact is that if places like iTunes disappear then more illegal downloads will take place, but then the MPAA have a bunch of people who they can let loose on those people and sue the hell out of them so why should they worry.

It's institutions like the MPAA that are going to smother arts like music altogether.

crApple are no saints in this matter.

Another viewpoint:

Apple screws songwriters (again) ? The Register

El Reg said:
Apple threatened to close down its iTunes Music Store if the composer's share rose from nine cents per song to 15 cents per song. The threat was made in a submission to the US Copyright Royalty Board, the arbitrator which sets the rate for statutory licences.

Apple and the Digital Music Association had wanted to screw composers even harder: pushing for a reduction in the rate to 4.8 cents per track, or six per cent of "applicable revenues". Since Apple barely makes a profit on its iTunes store, that would be six per cent of bugger all being returned to the people who actually make the music.

Need to ditch these soulless middlemen. ;)

The last time I looked, the sample rate was crap and a whole album cost half as much as a real CD - not all that brilliant!

Although I have bought the odd thing off iTunas,
I still prefer to order the CD from Amazon or FNAC.

It turns up with 48 hours anyway (Free shipping too.)

And you end up with a back-up copy on CD after
ripping it. ;)

...and you get it on your itunes at a decent bitrate if you want. And there are no 'issues' should you wish to copy onto another computer further down the line, unlike stuff you download from Apple.

I've never used iTunes  So i dont know what its like. I'm just having a rant at the MPAA who never seem to be happy with what they have even if it's by their own rules. They always seem to be pushing for that little bit more. They have way too much power IMO.

How much do Apple make out of each song sale - profit?
I believe its about the same amount as what they want to increase the composer's share by. As Apple say they are in the business to make money - if they don't make any money why would they bother to keep it going? The way they make their money is no so much on iTunes sales but on iPod sales off the back of it all.

Think the download problems are on the windows version only Nev (not a dig at PCs mate btw!) :)
