Hi all. My Mito Lusso 1.4 is due a cam belt change - it's 2010 and 54000 on the clock so is a bit overdue. One garage has quoted £320 and one £550. The more expensive garage say this is a specialist job and requires the belt, tensioners and a variable timing unit plus the water pump and will take 3 1/2 hours and that £320 to them sounds unlikely to include all the recommended work. The cheaper place is Halffords and the more expensive is a small local garage I have used before but have no great affinity to. I'm in east London near Essex and dislike the local Fiat/Alfa dealer and garage so don't want to use them.
Other people here have had quotes under £300 so I am a little confused. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Maybe ring around a couple more alfa-specialist places in your sort of area? I do not know if the Lusso 1.4 is a Multiair engine ? If it is, changing the belt must be pretty simple, as there are only one camshaft to keep in correct timing. The inlet valves and variable timing is driven by cams on the common camshaft through the Multiair module and will not have any influence on the belt change. It will be as simple as on a 60 HP Fiat Panda...

If not too far away, Try Peak Alfa,Hope Derbyshire. I have been quoted £230 all in . The car will have a full serrvice at the sam time and cost about £440.

yes, I had already read this thread but you don't mention tensioners etc so wasn't completely sure this was the same amount of work and kit but thanks for the comparison.

Hi, had my cambelt, tensioner and water pump fitted for £210 at a local Fiat garage a year ago so £300 ish doesn't sound unreasonable, the engines are made by Fiat so the parts are quite inexpensive, the tensioner is just a small plastic wheel with a bearing in it, it comes in the box with the rubber belt if you buy it yourself, the belt and tensioner wheel is about £20-30 and the water pump about £30 so the biggest cost is the labour charge, hope this helps P.S the variable timing unit only needs changing if it is broken, you'll realise it's faulty because the engine clatters like a diesel even though it's a petrol motor, my friends Fiat Barchetta had this problem and it's still safe to drive the car if you can put up with the noise.

Mr Brand has it! The clatter at start up is the variator on the old TS engines, the MiTo doesn't use one. If your MiTo is clattering then you have a very different problem!

Just done some research and its true that the variator was only fitted to older fiat vvt (variable valve timing) systems, and even though the Mito engines have vvt they don't have a variator, sounds like that garage was trying it on :tut:

Yes, I will let you know how I go on.I have delt with Peak Alfa before and have been very impressed with the service and cost. The owners are Alfa enthusiasts. The owner has Alfa on the race track, and is brilliant to deal with. My car is booked in for the begining of June.

If I want a 2 1/2 hour drive...ironically the reason I'm getting the cam belt done is I'm overdue and have a drive to Chesterffield which is 2 1/2 hours but right by junction 28
