Hello Mito owners,

I have just re-convinced a friend of mine to get a mito after they were put off by the usual rabble warning her about reliability, wheels falling off, catching bubonic plague etc.

She is wanting something small, economical and pretty. Obviously it ticks the box for pretty, but how about economy and costs? Both alfas ive owned have been above average in terms of emmisions / tax and below average in mpg. So how does the mito fair, and what engines would you recommend?

Hello scruples. I've only had my Mito for a week and a half. It's a 1.4 TB multiair 135bhp. Taxation wise it's £90 a year which I think is more than reasonable for a car of it's class. Economy wise I've always had diesels so I guess any petrol engine would be a bit of a hit. I would expect between 35 and 40mpg depending on where it's being driven and what mode it's being driven in. These figures can be higher when driven gently on a run. Insurance wise, it's a gropu 19 and not much more expensive than my old 2.0 Mondeo but you may have to pay slightly higher excesses. Servicing seems to very from fairly expensive to extortionate but I took out a service plan for mine. The service intervals are 2 years or 18000 miles on my particular car and my plan covers three services at a total cost of £1048. As I said, I haven't owned mine for too long and I'm sure there will be plenty of long term mito owners along to tell you their experiences with different engines etc but this reply at leasy gives you a start.

If she doesn't need screamingly rapid performance, the latest 1.3JTDM-2 is free of road tax
and should average over 60MPG (my older example with 95BHP is averaging 62MPG :)

Mine's been reliable so far, OTOH I don't use it daily, and only do long trips...

We have two Mitos, both 1.4 TB's with 120 & 155 BHP respectively.

Combined they have covered around 40-45k and have been relatively problem free. I did have a power steering failure the other week but fortunately it was fixed quickly with frequent updates from the dealer, whilst the free AA cover with the car covered the courtesy car for the period as well.

The other Mito has had no problems (had both for probably a combined 40 months). I would recommend one and if purchased with the engines we have then i'd say expect around the 35mpg mark. For multiair i'd estimate a 3-5mpg benefit.

Insurance for us has been around the £400 mark.

Good info from all thank you.

Have all these cars been bought from new or has anyone picked up a 2nd hand one? From what I've gathered power is not a requirement, so the more efficient lower tax engines would be the better option, if service is copmparative.

2 year servicing sounds nice....although it seens that they charge you more at time of service for the privilege.

Nice to see a new breed of super mini alfa owners joining the fold :)

One important fact (which the dealer might not mention) is that new diesels are all
Euro 5 emissions compliant- this is achieved with a diesel particulate filter, which
requires either hard driving or ECU-triggered regeneration to keep them clear.

What this means is that they're unsuitable for frequent short journeys!

If this is the normal usage pattern expected, go for a petrol engine!

Alternatively, go second-hand and look for one of the early Mito 1.3JTDM models-
these don't have a DPF, and are easy to distinguish as they have a 6-speed gearbox.

If you check the handbook re dpf it is very simple, if it needs regen the light comes on. At this point you are asked to drive at 2000rpm plus for around 15 mins, which just means holding lower gears a little, not thrashing it! I certainly wouldn't let that stop you getting a newer diesel.

In answer to other points, I got my 1.6jtd about a month ago, 59 plate, ex demo, only 8500 miles for about half of new price. I've done 3000 miles, mixed types of journeys, averaging 52.5mpg so far. The last tank on motorway gave 62.5, so round town is more like 42mpg... Tax is 90 for year.

flicks, you didn't get the 5 year complimentary servicing? I have the same model as you 135MA Veloce, and got the 5 years free servicing package :)

If she's looking for something economical and isn't going to drive it in too "spirited" a fashion, I'd recommend getting a 1.3 diesel. They're pretty good on fuel, look nice, go fairly well and should be pretty reliable.

Don't worry, I know aaaalllll about the dreaded and much maligned DPF! I'm hoping to have enough money spare to get mine removed and engine remapped in the near future! Bloody things ;).

A real pain in the 2.4 engine as it hurts your mpg by about 20%, and the egv can get blocked easily.

Thanks for the wise words all.

I have a 1.4 155 but it's remapped and after market exhaust... Current MPG is 38 - 40mpg if I drove senisibly I do think I'll happily get near towards 50 mpg..

To put it in Prospective I use to have a 1.5 Suzuki Swift and Mpg I use to get 32mpg

My journeys are 2.5 miles to work eachway and then motorway journeys around 250 miles each time.

I am getting just over 38mpg from my 2010 135MA. 20 miles each way to work each day, mostly fast B road stuff with very little traffic. Great engine this MA but I am a little disappointed by the consumption. I was expecting 45 or so.

The car's done nearly 10,000 miles and has been mechanically perfect. Had a few Blue and Me glitches otherwise reliable. More than I can say for a new Audi TT I had in 2007. Oh yes, it's used no oil at all so far.
