A friend of mine has an '05 plate MINI ONE (petrol). It has developed a coolant loss problem that has me a bit stumped. Over the course of a couple of days it loses sufficient that the heater stops working altogether. However there is none leaking out when it's running, no tell-tale marks, and no wet carpets to suggest a heater matrix problem.

This made me think head gasket but there is no water in the oil, no oil in the water, no rough running, and no overheating. Even when stationary with the engine running, it doesn't get hot.

I'm kind of thinking water pump and it's only leaking when the engine is pulling a few revs but would be grateful for other thoughts.

On one of my cars I suffered a slight radiator leak.

The symptoms were pretty similar to those on the mini.

Because the leak was small, the coolant was evaporating as soon as it left the radiator, hence no signs of leakage.

However once the rad was out of the car, and the fans removed you could see a white mark where the leak was due to the coolant residue.
