engine turns over
as the clutch is let out the car will stall
with the car turned off all the gears can be selected.
have I got a problem that needs the gearbox out, and what are the steps!

With engine off and gearbox in Neutral, does the car roll?

car does roll in nutral.

What happens when you try to start the engine with the box in Neutral and the clutch out?

Really not getting the issue.

Is it stalling because it won't go into gear? Or is it stalling when in neutral and you let out the clutch.

Sounds like failure in the gearbox.

Does it also roll with engine off and box in gear?

because with the engine off, I can select all the gears, and the car starts and runs with the clutch in, I suspect it is something to do with the throw out. Is it common to have a failure with this model at the throw out?

how do I rule out ...if it is a diff problem?
I have the car jacked up and the front wheels off.

car starts in any gear.
and as u let the clutch out, loud metal clanking sound as if there is a loose rotating bolt hitting something.

Apart from it being a manual box 147, we haven't got much info to go on.
Which engine is it?

Sounds like the fingers from the pressure plate are starting to come off.
You'll need a new clutch.

thanks,,,,is there any way I can confirm this before I start ripping into it?
Well it is gearbox related and you'll see the clutch when the gearbox comes out.
So gearbox or clutch, the box has to come out.

Yup you won't know until removing the gearbox. Then you can properly identify tbe problem.

But whilst its removed you may as well replace the clutch and slave no matter if thats not the issue. Change tbe gearbox oil as you'll need to remove tne half drive shaft abd thats if the gearbox is okay. Generally the petrols dont suffer any gearbox issues. Its very much over engineered the box to the ts or jts power output.

So I suspect clutch will be your issue.
