I sold my Panda 100 to a dealer in London, who had a "private customer" who was desperate! After a week of haggling, he got me down more than I would have liked. And now I see its for sale at Mangoletsi!

For way over a grand more than I sold it for. grrrrrr

have i been "done"? And would it have been Mangoletsi? :tut:

jesus give the dealer a brake, mangos would have been buying it off the dealer, so your dealer would have been trying to make as much as possible on the sale to them, hence your low price. such is the car trade, and delears mark up prices anyway, they wouldnt sell it for what they gave you for it, no dealer would, then in the business to make a profit:thumbs:

if you wernt happy with the price you got, you should have took it to a different dealer, or sold it privately, simple;)

The only time I've ever chopped cars in with a dealer is when I know there's something wrong with the car I'm getting shot of, that I wouldn't want to inflict on a private buyer.

Frankly, if the dealer hasn't spotted the problem(s) with my swapper and gives me the price I'm looking for against a nicely discounted used motor, that's his problem.

I love heart-warming stories of human kindness to others.
the guy was an ar$e and deserved all he got, tried to get out of giving me the grand he owed me, and then did the same to another customer. hence why im glad he went bust:D:thumbs:

Swiss,
Is chopping a dodgy motor into a dealer much like making love to a beautiful woman ?

My work sold a Diesel Citroen C5 estate to a local garage for £800

The local garage did nothing too it, and stuck it up for £2795

They advertised it as one owner. Technically it was, but it was a pool car that was well hammered.

And they sold it.

I'd imagine that 2nd hand car trading is not a very exact science. For every excessively profitable deal, I bet there is a deal they wish they had not bothered with.

Had an old Escort a few years back (before my taste improved) and sold it to a bloke when it had about 80k on the clock! The car was in great nick as i'd looked after it!
Drove past a dodgy looking secondhand car dealers in liverpool about 3 years later and spotted my old car on the forecourt, As it was my first car and i lost my driving virginity in it, i had to go and check it out, and it only had about 50k on the clock?? The dealer came out and asked if i was interested in it! If he wasn't such a massive meathead i'd have pulled him up on it! But as i'm a coward i just said 'no thanks' and left!

Most garages selling main stream cars will run anything between £1500-£2500 margin, depending on the buy in price and the market. I feel a touch sorry for the salesman that sold the Fiat, he would have made very little from the deal if his commission is percentage based. If I sell a used car at work that only has a grand across it, then if it needs a warranty, service, mot, body prep etc, I may only make about £30, not much at all for the effort involved on the sale, other cars however, can make much more:)

Given that they're subject to the sale of goods act, I'm not surprised that they put at least a grand on a car. I always look on that as fair enough and wouldn't pay that markup for a private sale. Most people forget or don't realise that there is more comeback against a trader. The worthless warranties they always try and flog you are worth much less than your statutory rights entitle you to and they know that.

Sparkywills1, a very valid point I worked at Mangoletsi for 4 years and a lot of you would have dealt with me across the years. You do the deal and think great this one will help the commision this month but by the time the car has been prepped you end up far less than you thought. I suppose shows Mangoletsi are spending time preparing these cars ???.

i was offered £5500 for my 3 year old Fiesta ST that cost me £13k I sold it via Ebay and got £6300 for it and it turned out to be a small private dealer that bought it off me he then resold it for £6699 which seemed very fair to me as it needed a 3rd year service and MOT, selling cars always makes you cry unless its a car that's reach the age when you buy it you can use it and sell it on for similar money
