Last week I had the swirl flaps removed and EGR blanked off (not sure if this is related)

On my drive home tonight I started to smell diesel stronger and stronger they all over a sudden saw smoke coming from my engine in ever increasing volumes.

I pulled over and on inspection (removing engine cover) my engine is soaked in diesel! There are large pools of it in every nook and crannie!!

Please help, is this an injector or the rail gone (see pics)

Would not panic just yet. Quite possibly related to the worjk you had done, something not tightnened up correctly. Can you see where the fuel is leaking from when the engine is riunning?

Would not panic just yet. Quite possibly related to the worjk you had done, something not tightnened up correctly. Can you see where the fuel is leaking from when the engine is riunning?

Oh I really hope so. No didn't start engine again as didn't want to damage anything further, have a tow truck coming to pick it up in the morning to take back to the garage that did the work.

Couldn't pin point a source as the entire top of the engine was soaked in diesel.

I thought it was the end for the engine!

Most likely the pipe connections to one or more of the injectors haven't been tightened enough. They do have to be very tight as the fuel pressure is enormous - over 1200 bar. Don't run it to casually have a look, this pressure is capable of injecting fuel into the body with lethal force. It may be that a pipe has fractured or olive is damaged. The recommendation is not to reuse but replace with new when disturbed. I've not done so and it's fine but you may need to.

Unlikely given the volume and distribution but check the fuel filter tight.

Fuel return hoses (on top of injectors).
They tend to became hard and nonflexible because of heat.

Fuel return hoses (on top of injectors).
They tend to became hard and nonflexible because of heat.

You got it spot on! All fuel return hoses were corroded and leaking, paid £100 to tow to my Alfa specialist and £3 to fix!!! Dohhhh
