So just got in from using the GTA today and less than 5mins away I had a message come up saying 'low battery charge' so I thought that was odd, so got home and switched off and left a few minutes and started her again and didn't have any warning messages appear and all the checks we're fine, no MCSF error messages or a battery icon NOTHING!

Now I am thinking that my alternator is playing up, reason being is that when I rev the car with the lights on they get brighter then dimmer when on idle.

So what you guys and gals think? :)

Sounds like alternator problems. It will come and go for a bit, then get progressively worse then die completely.. Mine lasted just over a week. It's not an easy job to do either unfortunately....

You can test with a multimeter when the car is running....

Cheers Joe, I posted up this thread then done a search and found your thread about the same problem, think I might be lucky as she's having a clutch and Q2 fitted next week so he can do it then, saves a nice extra labour bill I think? :)

my 'low battery charge' comes on every now and then when im caning it, for some reason, still does it after I got my altenator changed too. I would be tempted to say 'dont worry about it scott' if it doesnt happen often but if i say that it'll go **** up next week

you always cane it. It is in your DNA..:p

I had 'low battery charge' come on a few weeks ago - just the once.. so I bought a new battery anyway as the one in there was blatently not that good. If it starts doing it regularly I'd look into it more.. but if it's just the once.. might just be a bit of a random one

worth looking at the battery. the one in my old TS was fine, or so i thought. no issues, even through last winter, but when i bought the GTA my battery was swapped into that, and when the alternator failed it was tested and found that the charge was good, but the battery only had 41% capacity for a charge.

Okay cheers guys :) I hope it's the battery playing up because shes usually always on a trickle charger if I don't use her but have not connected her up at all for the last few weeks so I feel that I might of been hiding the error!

New battery I think :)

Well I will get the AA out tomorrow to check it over, im leaning 75% to alternator and 25% to battery at the moment...:)

You say you've not been on the trickle charger for the last few weeks? Have you just been doing lots of little journeys and not giving the battery enough distance to properly recharge do you think? Maybe it's just low on charge and as such not a fault.

That is posible but the error come up after driving 30 odd miles and only appreared at the end so it's a good guess :)

That's good to know for future reference

BeautifulBusso, get a multimeter on your battery so that you know for sure. When fully charged, the battery should register near 13 volts or so......when the rengine is running it should register higher, around 14 volts. If it isn't, then there is an issue with the alternator I'd say, especially as you've mentioned that the lights go bright and dim when you rev the engine at idle.

Mine had problems in the cold weather last year and I kept getting the low battery charge reminders.

It turned out that the dealer did not fit correct battery and when i took it to the specialist he showed me the gap in the battery housing where a bigger battery should have gone......

Well the AA guy came out and done a few tests, the results are that the alternator is charging up the battery totally fine at 14.4v+ and does not budge, even under load. The only small thing he picked up on was the amps reading was constantly changing when they should be near static

Oh and the battery is totally fine with 97% capacity :D

So who knows why it happened, just that i'll be keeping an eye on it :)

My alternator lasted a while. The battery light would flash when absolutely screwing the a45e out of it but that was it. Was like that for a couple of months and then it final flashed up. I managed to get to lymington and back to poole with the light on.....few.
