Hi guys really need your help. I'll start the story from the start as it may help towards finding the cause of my problem. I have just done a resto on my 33 16v, drove really well for a couple of weeks until I was driving down a country road and I felt a weird knock. I could feel it was on the left handside of the car. The engine then cut out and I just made it to a safe part, I looked underneath and noticed petrol everywhere. What had happened was the Allen head bolts had come loose (god knows how) from the drive shaft and ripped my fuel filter off, cutting the engine before the last one and a half came loose. I got a new drive shaft as mine was a mess at the gearbox end. Installed it and I got a loud knock from the leftside as Iu pulled off and and a vibration when driving. Then noticed the output flange that the Allenhead bolts go into looked a bit out of balance when spinning the wheel, I found a good used one and replaced it but still got the same problem. It's got me and my mechanic cousin abit stumped. I really hope the gearboix isn't damaged as its a very low mileage one I paid quite abit for, although I have a spare.
Any advice, or anyone heard of this happening?
Thanks dave

Sorry Deggy
I'm not an expert but I think it is the gearbox I'm afraid - is there still "play" in the output flange? If so then it is probable that the bearings have gone and/ or the hole in the gearbox casing that the bearing sits in has become worn.

Hi mate. I changed the bearing casing, does that bolt to the gearbox with 4 17mm bolts and has splines similar to the ones that go into the hubs? Starting to think the drive shaft I.brought is dodgy. I'm going to take Tue new one off and see if I can make a gooden out of two

It is not the gear box it is just bad shaft joint on the side of the wheel probably , the one that twist while turning the wheel ( sorry , bit late and cant remember technical word for that. Try and swap shaft and check if the noise is transfered to the other side. it is a bit pain but can help you test it.

Hi Dave - sorry to hear you have been having problems. When you say the drive flange looked out of balance, was it running true, or rotating eccentrically (if you see what I mean?). There is an outer bearing in the hub carrier that might have failed (see if there is any play in the removed one - there was in mine), otherwise the only thing that can cause the shaft to run out of true would be if it is bent (and that would have to be true of your replacement as well, unlikely), or perhaps more worryingly the flailing driveshaft caused some damage to the differential carrier, in which case its a gearbox out job to sort out.

As Greek says, it may be related to the driveshaft outer CV joint (new, or secondhand?), so look at that first. While the shaft is off, try running the engine in gear to see if there are any clonks from the gearbox end. With the RH wheel on the ground only the LH drive flange will rotate so you won't go anywhere (unless you have a slipper in there!)

Good luck tracking down the cause.

Haha didn't realise it sounded like that! Cheers lauren I think I'm going to look at the cv joints at the weekend. Might swap the good one from the other side to see if it is the gearbox or the shaft. Also I shall be joining the nova kitcar club in the next few weeks. Been offered one from a friend with a floor pan for 150 quid, all I need is a conversion plate for my old 16v engine

Sorry I forgot too add, yes the old bearing had a tad of play in it, enough to visually tell. And the driveshaft was second hand. My old one that came off looks fine apart from the face that bolts to the gearbox with allen heads. The second had one I brought is on the car, so I will take it off and check.
Cheers dave

Try logging in to the Euro-Nova forum first - it operates independently of the club, and is supported by voluntary contributions so is free to register. Lots of tech advice, rebuilds, picture threads etc. (one or two contributed by yours truly!).

Unfortunately the club no longer produces a newsletter and has limited membership benefits, apart from the free BBQ available at three kit car shows in the year...

I look forward to seeing your 16v Nova soon
