Gearbox working completely fine but won't go into 6th.... Refuses point blank :(

All other gears including reverse are fine.

Engine mounts are fine too

Plus side is it's very responsive on the motorway!

I have trouble engaging sixth gear when I use it although that isn't very often. A double press of the clutch pedal seems help. I've always thought it was stiff due to lack of use but prehaps not?

Linkages?

Mine had a problem when I first got it where you could crunch reverse whilst on the move solved by replacing either the linkages or something on the gear selector (was on warranty so don't have details)

I had linkage probs on the 147jtd but influenced all gears - not just one... Which baffles me a bit.

Main bush replaced in the selector and like new on the 147

Sounds a bit bizzare, any other symptoms prior to it leaving? Grinding noises before or after?

You say reverse is still there and ok, is it reluctant to go in at all?

I've got a spare 2.5 box BTW, you're more than welcome to nick the selector mech off it to try if you want.

grinded for occasionally before going (leading me to think linkage) then went stiff to shift then one day nothing

reverse is fine

might take you up on the offer - as ever too busy at work to sort really!

When going for 6th while driving lift the reverse gate and carefully try and get it, if this let's you get 6th there is 13 mm nut on the gearbox selector which adjusts the left to right movement of the linkage, you will need someone to sit in the car while you adjust the linkage, good luck

Cheers fellas

Battery tray out tomorrow I think to have a look for the adjustment

Pretty certain it's nothing much

One thing I have appreciated is how flexible the motor really is - 5th gear engine is sooooo flexible!

Mpg difference with 75% plus motorway work is 2 - 3mpg difference - not as big a difference as I would have thought... Noise level isn't much more either making me think a shorter final drive ratio for road use would be fine

You can acheive that by using a 2.5v6 box but with it being so flexible why bother? The only thing you'll really end up with is worse mpg. (You can try mine if you like - it has a 2.5 box on it)

Old thread but would like to get some help myself.
I had these fitted in mayor overhaul. Gearbox repair, Q2, new clutch etc.
Gear Linkage Bushes 'Top Hat' - Autolusso New Alfa Romeo Parts

But after the upgrade the 5'th and 6'th are hard to engage, unless I double press the clutchpedal and even then it engages when pedal is compleatly flat to the floor.
Other time there is no problem, goes to 5th and 6th with no big hassle.
Also tried that trick, when gears doesnt want to to place and you lift the reverse gear knob littlebit. Then gears go in very easily and clutch is only pushed a little...

Went back to dealer and said that this is the problem. I guess they didn't find it out before by their own because it sometimes works flawlessly.
They tried to fix it yesterday for many hours, but now 6'th seems to go in OK, but 5'th is way worse than before. Now it wants to go far to the corner, but it shouldn't.

They admitted that this is new problem to solve for them and they dont exaclty know how.
Thats why I am here :p
