how does the 1.4 Ltr box work with the 16v ?
I know how the 1.5 works, but I think the 1.4 is shorter ?

Chris, by far and away the best mod i ever did to the 16v. The only difference is the shorter crown wheel and pinion, but the car really comes alive, it even feels more potent in the low-mid range.

We both know thats not true :tut:

2nd gear in a 16v at 6700 rpm is at about 110 khm.
Same gear same revs on the 16V with a box from a 1.5 Ti, is at about 80 to 90 khm.

I tested them ! :lol:

No the S2 1,5 ti have the same ratio as the 16v or any other S3 except 1,4. Believe me i drove over 40.000 km in my S2 1,5 ti. The S1 1,5 is aborter story.
No way you will reach 110 km/h at 6700 in a 16v. I have one myself.

The 1.4 box again makes no sense to me.
I've only seen ONE 1.4 33 in Cyprus in my life, and I know who had it as well. Car was sold as one piece and is still running on its own gear.
So if no other 1.4 33's were running here, why does my best man's 33 get up to 80 something in second gear with a box he took out of a stock 1.5 Ti, and I can do 110 to 115 in second ?

I've checked my speedo with a police radar just to be sure where I stand with the 17" wheels, and I was only 3khm's off at 100, so I know thats working as good as it ever will.

3rd gear gets me to 170 ! I know it sounds like a lot, but it does !

The funny thing is, that 4th gear takes me from 170 to 200, and then 5th gear from there on depending on a lot of things.

Brings back memories me of my old 33. Sold to a mate as a track car in the end. Rear arches rusted around the shock turrets and took a bit of welding to repair. Mine was a horrible mustard kind of colour.
I also discovered that they will rev like bugger; especially if you take off the bob weight on the rotor arm that acts as the rev limiter. On standard valve springs valves and pistons kiss at about 7k rpm. A mechanic with no mechanical sympathy - who would have thought it!

Yes i want to bet. Not even with the gearbox from a S2 1,7 QV Will you reach 110 km/h at 6700 rpm and thats the highest gearing you Can get in a 33. 2nd gear in that is 15,3 km/h pr 1000 rpm. How high are you're rev limiter?
It sounds to me like you're speedometer is off. Not unusal on 33s :)
I checked mine with a gps and its 2 km/h off and i'm not getting 110 km/h at 6700 rpm.

Chris, seems to me that the 1.4 and 1.5 boxes are the same. The 1.4 33 was maybe badged 1.3 in Cyprus, its 1351cc.

And I too confirm that in my Sprint with 16v gearbox, 7.000rpm and second gear meant about 110 km/h.
