Hi...please can someone help me? Car running perfectly, parked it, when we tried to start on return 'go to dealer message' and only about a 1500 revs possible with some trailing smoke. Car staggered home and problem remains. Please what is likely cause (dirty components?) and can I cure it: if so how! Would be a lengthy run - if it didn't do more harm - to a capable garage, as previously nearby demolished for housing.

Clean the EGR which sits under the engine cover at the top right of the block. The mechanism inside can become seized open, you'll need some EGR cleaner and a T20/25 torx screwdriver if memory serves. Also, see if you have any cracks in the turbo hoses which can give similar symptoms. If you feel up to it you can also clean the air-flow sensor, if it's in a similar position to the 147 it lives underneath the battery tray. Just make sure you use the correct cleaner as a replacement will set you back around £120.

You need to get the codes read otherwise we're just guessing, but giving the EGR valve a clean and checking the turbo pipes are good starting points. If you're going to clean the MAF ONLY use Isopropyl Alcohol spray, other things like carb cleaner will leave a residue, spray it liberally and leave it to dry, DON'T be tempted to rub or scrape the sensor wire with anything or you'll kill it. What colour was the smoke?

Many thanks for the advice........smoke didn't appear to be very black (definitely not blue) but the tail pipe now coated with nice black deposit.......would be great to even be able to do temporary cure to shift car.

Yeah, good shout. Apologies for omitting this info, it's vitally important to use the correct stuff.
