First time I've posted in a while as I no longer have an Alfa  but have been driving the wife's Mito (09 reg, 1.4TB 120) quite a lot recently, having not driven it for a good few months.

It's 3 years old in June and has done about 17,000 miles, and it just seems very noisy on the road. Over bumps there is a definite knocking noise, coming from the driver's side but unsure if it is front or rear, and it just generally rattles about a lot. It seems worse when the car is cold then gets better as the car warms up, and on decent roads like motorways it is fine, but on country roads or anything a bit bumpy it sounds terrible! I drive a 54 reg diesel Seat Ibiza and the Mito makes mine seem quiet!

Anybody got an idea what it might be? The rear driver's side wheel had a slow puncture for a while which meant it was occasionally running with not much pressure in the tyre, could this have messed up the suspension somewhere? The front splitter is also not on the car anymore as I took it off after it was left hanging half off after she had an encounter with a kerb, but I wouldn't have thought that would mean this much increased road noise. I seem to remember it being a pleasure to drive but with all this noise it's now an ordeal!

I guess I should just book it into the dealer to have a look but have never had a good experience with Autoworld since we bought it. Would I just ask them to look for whatever is making the noise under warranty?

I have done a search and couldn't find anything so apologies if this has already been covered somewhere, any advice would be great.

I have just had this fixed. Cost me £50 and noise has gone straight away.
My knocking noise only happened on speed bumps or rough roads but was extremely loud and annoying.

KimM, was it the problem as mentioned in the link above?

Is the warranty on a Mito 2 or 3 years? Sure I read that it's 2 years manufacturer and 3 years dealer so I should be able to get it done for nothing? But does it mean I have to take it back to the dealer who sold the car?

Sorry for all the questions!

Its a wear and tear Item so you will not get this through warrenty unless you are extremely lucky....

It's just the linkage that gets loose from over wear when going over rough ground or speedbumps. Using DNA all the time will stiffen the suspension and cause you more wear.

I did not get mine fixed from a dealer... tbh I didn't get a quote as I knew it would be wahey more then a speacialist dealer.. I went to Alfatech in Huddersfield to get mine done and Dan charged £50 which has sorted the problem straight away...

I have managed to have a proper look at this today and there is a definite problem with the rear suspension on the driver's side, the wheel arch sits about an inch lower above the wheel than it does on the passenger side so something has definitely dropped. Guessing it will be pretty expensive to fix, and if it's unlikely to be done in warranty there's no way I'm taking it to a dealer.

I used to take my 156 to ItalAutos in Chesterfield, but have moved now so its a bit of a trek over there. There is a half decent independent garage in my village so might just take it there, with it basically being a Punto in disguise I'm guessing they will have an idea what to do with it!

Is it safe driving the car like this? Obviously I'd rather leave it where it is til I can get it fixed but with us both working it's difficult.

It's also a known issue & others have had it done under warranty without any problems

AFAIK DNA doesn't have any effect on the suspension*, only on VDC, ASR, power steering & engine response ;)

* The QV may be an exception.

Bit of an update on this, rang Autoworld in Chesterfield (where we bought the car), the guy there seemed VERY keen on getting it in, even saying I should ring the AA and get them to tow it there as it clearly wasn't safe to drive! He wasn't particularly helpful when I said about it being a warranty repair, saying they would assess it then order the parts, then put a warranty claim in. Said they might keep the car for 2 weeks! Didn't fancy this so called Lookers in Sheffield, which is now our local dealer since they opened, but I've never been there. The guy in there was much more helpful, saying I should just bring it in one day this week, they'd have a quick look and go from there.

I then took it to the local garage in my village (not an Alfa specialist by any means, just a garage!) and they had a look at it for a good half hour, drove in it with me to hear the noise, and said they couldn't see any issue. Said the suspension on all 4 corners was fine, no broken springs or shockers, the rear drivers side might just have a bit more wear possibly caused by running on a flat tyre on and off for ages! I think the reason I thought it as so much lower than the other side was my drive is on a sideways slope so it was just how the car was sitting on my drive. At the garage there was barely any difference (I am a bit of an idiot sometimes). They said just to keep an eye on things and if it gets noticeably worse, they would take another look. They didn't charge me for all this which I was very pleased about, I've been to some garages who charge 25 quid just to take a look! So now I've been told the suspension is fine, but still got this annoying noise, so not sure what it could be!

So now I think I am going to take it to Lookers, if they say there is something they can fix under warranty, let them do it, but if they try to charge me for anything I won't bother. My wife says she doesn't even notice the noise and I guess it's her car!

typical so once again had a nice little lie from Mangoletsi after I asked them... Basically told me i'd have to pay and did I want a quote - Told them no as I'd have to travel two hours to get to them anyway and now find out it's under warranty.. Ah well would have paid that in petrol anyway I suppose GRRR

Good point - didn't think about that - My warrenty's probably Void anyway with the amount of stuff Mango's has done to it

Right, it's been to Lookers. They have diagnosed it as an issue with the drop link from the anti roll bar on the front driver's side. Ordering a new one today then fitting it next week under warranty. Much better service than Autoworld!
