Im away to take my alfa 147 T Spark into them tomorrow as my car wont start due to a IMMOBILIZER/ASR FAILURE, they have said they will need to do a diagnostics test on it 1st which will cost £47.50 + VAT to start with then whatever the fault is after that we will have to come to some sort of arrangement 1st as i only bought the car on monday so i havent alot of cash left over but it needs sorted 1 way or another & the nearest alfa dealership is in perth or glasgow as far as i know & i live in aberdeen, so after reading all the posts on here about them it gives me hope that they will be able to fix my car & the main thing - at a reasonable price i hope cause as said i havent much cash left after buying my 2004 147 T Spark Lusso, if anyone has any ideas on how much the work will be could you please get in touch with me so i have a idea before going out there & letting them see my jay drop after they tell me how much it'll cost :).. I just want to be prepared for the worst scenario, so if any 1 can enlighten me, then youre comments/messagtes would be very much appreciated, thanks...

Hopefully my 147 T Spark Lusso only needs reprogramed, its getting a diagnostic check 1st to see where the fault lyes then see what needs done after that but i'll keep this thread updated when i find out the cause/issue with my Alfa as after only buying the car on monday i havent got much spare cash left over atall, so all i can do now is wait to hear how much the damage is going to come to, then make a decision once thats done, as said i'll update my status after the D/C has been carried out, then 1 way or another i'll have to make a decision on what action to take ?!?!?!

I think I may have head gasket issues. Firstly my coolant tank has a brownish film on the inside - I thought that this may be due to the coolant not being changed for a long time (I have no idea when it might of been done prior to my ownership a month ago). So, I was planning a flush next weekend. However, I checked my coolant level yesterday and it has dropped considerably. Probably not helped by me giving it beans on the way home from Aviemore via the Lecht last week!

There is mixed reviews of Kirkhill so I'm unsure of whether to trust them with my GTA or take it down to CPs in Dundee who come well recommended as a specialist in all things Alfa.

Anyone used Kirkhill in the past few months and can give a glowing review?

Any good garage will be able to tell you If your head gasket has gone by doing a sniff test. But for the repair I would go to CP in Dundee or Mcleans in Edinburgh to get the work done

Fingers crossed for you!

Cheers for the reply. I don't know whether to try a flush myself to clean it out and then monitor it for a week or two or just to bite the bullet and head down to CPs. It's a pain that there isn't a good indie up here. Also, living in town and having to park on the street means finding somewhere to do this flush is a problem! Usually when I want to do anything on my car I take the opportunity to visit my parents for the weekend down in Dunfermline.

Do you work for the 'big W' gleggzer? I reckon you must as I remember seeing a nice GTV occasionally in our carpark which now seems to have been replaced by a very nice Mito!

Yip for my sins I work for the big W !

I have noticed a 147 before which then changed to a GTA when i have been over at WFT H 2!

Still think you should get a sniff test to confirm that the head has gone or not before you do anything else..

Cheers

a sniff tes wont show a head gasket failiur where the water is going in to the pistons (gascket broken between the pistons and the water jacket) only an external gasket leak.
water compression test or piston comprestion test would show that. see if theres white smoke. and if u only do short runs its normal to use water .

Didn't want to take over the Kirkhill thread with my woes but I had it checked over by the local mechanic I have used for a few years. He did a compression test and diagnosed a leaking radiator. It's getting replaced on Monday. Cheers for the advice.

I think the point i was trying to make was to take it to a local garage first to get checked before he travelled all the way down to Dundee to get it repaired..!

Glad its only the radiator

I'm taking my Brera into Kirkhill Auto's tomorrow. Engine management light came on this morning. Think it could be the egr valve.

It's under warranty(AA) so gonna let them check it over.

Hi guys, I'm in Nairn and struggling to find anywhere near me to do a cambelt/pump change plus service for less than a grand! :wow:

I'm going South for Xmas and have looked at a few places but due to the Xmas period, there isn't any great solutions. Front runner at the moment is McLennons in Edinburgh, but that would still mean a 7hr drive (in 2 equal-ish stints) and a full day in Edinburgh.

I would, however consider Kirkhill's if the price was right and the job is done to a high standard.

I've read this post with interest, and wonder if anyone else can convince me to give them a go?

Cheers.

After paying £60 for a diagnostic I decided to buy my own diagnostic equipment. Bought the software and interface cable.

Hooked it up to my brera, replaced the egr then cleared the fault. My 147 was running rough, connected it and found one of the plugs was knackered. New plug and cleared the error.

Great piece of equipment. Can tell u when last service was performed, reset warning lights as well as diagnosing all faults.

If anyone has an engine management light on in their Alfa, fiat or lancia and doesn't want to spend £60 on a diagnostic then give me a shout. I wish I had this years ago as would have saved me quite a bit of money on garage bills.....

Personally I'd spend an extra hour and a half on the road and take it to CP in Dundee who have been mentioned several times on here recently and have a great reputation.

I've had some major work done by Kirkhill - important things were missed that have proven very expensive in the long run!

I wouldn't rule Kirkhill out but i'd have a chat with them and CP and see who you feel most comfortable with.

Hope this helps
