Hi, my key doesn't work since I owned it, for my 147 GTA, so can't set the alarm or remote lock. Just have to use the key in the door. A local indie yesterday tested it, and says that it is transmitting... but it doesn't work. He was rushing though, and I didn't get as much info as I was hoping.. Has it lost its connection to the car computer? I didn't get any info with the car, no manual or radio codes etc, so wondering what the next thing I can do to try and get it working? What are my options?

Hi. Thanks for the responses - I did replace the battery already.

If you read the original message again, I said it does transmit... Ie. it lights up. It just doesn't do anything..

Liking the sound of that filip, whats the limitations on using that cable? I;ve read something about not being able to connect to the air bag or something? Is that the only thing I can't 'talk' to or are there other limitations?

Also, is it possible to do it with the demo version? No that I'm against buying it if it can get my key going again

Cheers, sounds like I have an angle to explore

Just FYI in case some ppl didn't get the underlying message here:

Even if the key fob's lights light up when button is pressed, it doesn't guaranty the transmitter is working. Often, there is a bad connection with the battery and the chipset.

+1 also for the battery or connectivity issues from inside the car...

These scenarios, IMO are much more likely than a central lock that suddenly forgets the key and needs to be repaired...

Also there is a heavy risk when reprogramming the locks - that it fails and the key is banned - some1 correct me... Better do some research in the many threads on this subject!

fewleh: About the ELM you are correct; the only drawback is that ELM doesn't connect to 147/156 airbags. For that no choice to use KL. However, it is the only way to connect to newer stuff like the body computer/climate control and newer alfas.

No, you just link the pins in the same way that you would have to with a KKL interface, or buy these adapters.
Was that a reply to my post? I didn't try airbag myself, but according to FiatECUScan - Fiat, Alfa, Lancia ECU Reader / Scanner some older modules don't work with ELM: e.g. 146 motor/abs or the airbags for 147/156. When I modify the ELM I don't even try to link pin #3.. but if you have made it work, I'm interested to know!

PS: Please consider carefully before linking the pins together. Better use adaptors or switches (that obay the standard adaptor behavior) and remember to use them only when you know the effect - might cause short circuit when on other brands or newest alfas.

Just a quick note on the cable filip linked me to above - since i bought it (for £10.50) the seller has decided to change his price to £59.99 ! BE aware you can get it alot cheaper from other sellers.

Hmm.. In the summer those are more expensive maybe. 3 months ago, I bought two for 8 and 9$ incl shipping, now this price is impossible to find. Usually gets up to 15$. I check every 6 hours for a bargain and after 4 weeks I finally scored another one at 10.50$ (dollars).

Need to be patient and don't be scared to order from big hong kong/singapore sellers - I choose those that include shipping.

Wait, stop and breathe.

Which interface did you buy first? What version of FiatECUScan? What version of the ELM? What is listed when you try "Scan" function?

You're very brave if you intend to program your keys. I'm still looking for someone with experience with this before I try anything... It is risky your keys will be banned permanently if the procedure fails/is interrupted.

Grr - the problem is, the chip board needs a small modification to work - but I cannot open the plastic unit up... Pretty much destroyed it trying to prise it apart.. see attachment. What is the normal way to get these 'sealed units' open?
