Hi all,

My key (or car) has started to play up. Unfortunately its my only key so I cant try another one.

When I press the button on the key, the red light flashes, but the car does not respond. I can however start the car normally...

Does anyone know what this could be? It has started doing this few weeks ago, so it comes and goes.

Tried a new battery in the fob? Might be so weak it just can't send the signal? The receiver is under the rear parcel shelf on a 156 ... try near the rear.

I've also read that if you touch the fob on your head when you press the button it improves the signal ... but then that was Mr Clarkson on TopGear!

Putting the key against your head makes you look a bit silly but it does work in increasing the range :0
If the key is working intermittently and you are sure it is not just a problem with the range then it probably has some circuit board breaks which need fixing. They tend to get worse and worse until breaking completely (and I'm not just saying that because I fix them!).

PS Lemi: get a spare key! ... quick! Not cheap but if you loose it ... well just read the other threads.

Try putting the key in the door, turn it to unlock the door and with it turned hold down the key button for several seconds........I got fed up with mine once when it did the same thing and this fixed it

Most likely just coincidence but worth a try :p

Its past midnight here and you guys just made me got out of my bed in my pyjamas, put the key to my head and press the trigger, turn the key in the door and push the button, walk around the car and point the at various parts of the car while pressing the button. I hope no one saw me do this. I guess I'll find out tomorrow

BTW, nothing worked.

I do want to buy another key, but at 160 quid just for the key is a bit too steep. I've read a lot of threads here about getting a key from ebay so I might try my luck there, as it seems to be 50-50 chance to get it working...

Chris, where is the circuit board exactly? Can you tell me a bit more about the problem I might be facing? :(

jammies

We better quickly think of something else for you to do.........see if your neighbours notice you lurking around your car :p

BTW that putting the key to your head thing works.....bizarre but true, not sure what it does to your brain though

Lemi

Not without writing an essay I`m afraid.

The board is inside the key. You may be lucky enough to spot the failed point if it is obvious but I use some pretty high-tech stuff to find the hairline cracks and failing joints. Sometimes they are ridiculously small. You need some fine tools to fix them too.

By all means take a look though, you may be lucky and something is just loose :) Does it rattle?

Hi
My Alfa turns but won`t start. My red key has never worked the central locking etc and is tatty and has tape where the press button should be. I wondered if I need to change the battery even though I never use it as a remote. Does the battery do anything as far as sending a message to the engine when starting the car (or trying to !)?

Chris,

it actually does rattle. It seems like there is something loose in it. I will pull it apart today to have look.

Where should I be looking for someone like you here in Brisbane Aus? "Key Repairer" or "Precision Electronics"???

I've spoken to 'automotive key specialists' here, and they can't help... unless its Holden or something...

Well, the key started working today....Hmmm Maybe it has Thursdays off....

Yep, you have circuit board breaks, I am pretty sure of it now. Give it a few days and the problems will be back :(
You really shoudl get a spare key anyway.
Oh, and by the way, i don't know anyone else who fixes keys like I do, or at least not in the same volumes. There are rumours of one in Slovenia but I don't speak the language so can't help you there  I fix about one a week from Australia though ;)

The battery is only used by the remote. If you don't use that bit then don't bother changing it.
