i bought a new key a month ago, and it came with a paper tag attached with four digits on it in this format: 0.0.0.0 (those are not the actual digits). Is that the code for the key?
I remember the dealer asking for my vin number and key number stamped on the key and i explained that i don't have a code. The new key also has this matching number. I do not have the code card so don't know? The key is still uncut and i want to have it cut.

Remote code

I think that's the code to program for the remote locking. The immobiliser code is cloned from your existing key by the key cutter, as long as they have the code reading programmer.

That's presuming you have the larger key with the black rubber 'button' on the top edge.

Don't know about the GTV, but the electronic code for my 156 Code2 key has 5-numbers in a 0.0.0.0.0 format.
There is also an alarm PIN code which may be 4-numbers, but I don't have that to check.

As Clive says, the 4 digit code is for the remote central locking. You sync the key to the car via the receiver unit (located in the courtesy light/rear view mirror area.) If you look up you will see an LED and a button. The workshop manual has the correct procedure on how to code the key in.

EDIT: The process is slightly confusing to begin with (at least it was for me ), as coding the remote central locking is nothing to do with the Alfa CODE system which satisfies the immobiliser.

Oh okay, I'll have to ask the key cutter to code the immobiliser for me then. I'll provide the brown key as I think my original red key is starting to "drift". At least once a week it fails to start the car, and the immobiliser light stays on. And the light on the key anly flashes once very quickly when pressed, even with new batteries so I need a key coded before the key stops working.

What are the numbers stamped on the key blade for?
