I recently bought my 2004 156 Sportwagon 2.4 JTD, and have found that the gear change isn't quite as smooth as I would like, there is an intermittent judder when I put the power down in higher gears, and there's a bit of a rattle or light clatter on idle, even when the engine is warm. My friendly alfa specialist tells me these are all sure signs that I should replace the flywheel and clutch unit. It's done 48k miles.

Has anyone in the forum opinions or experience on this, and if it's a reasonable conclusion to draw, how do I tell how urgent it is to fork out significant pennies for the job to be done?

Before you spend out the money on the DMF, check the drive shafts for play, it's a fairly similar problem. I bought a DMF and it ended up being the driveshafts as the symptoms are similar so I never fitted the DMF. It problaby is the DMF by the sounds of the description, but just get the driveshafts checked too. If there are severe vibrations in a high gear at low revs, it's the same test they did on my car.

Cheers,

Thanks for the answers, folks; I'll get the driveshafts checked too, but does anyone know about sourcing reconditioned DMFs? Worth thinking about, or just not the kinda part you would want to recondition in the first place?
Cheers

Yup, you can get them. It cost me about £200 for a recon one with a £30 sur charge from Italy. I don't think or couldn't find anyone that recon's them in the uk though. I'll look up the invoice and find out their details when I get home later. If you are really stuck, you can have my one that's at home and replace it or give me the money back or something if you like as we should have the same DMF/clutch/gearbox. PM me if you're interested.

Cheers,

Many thanks for the offer, Mark, but I'll hang fire on your unit for now.

However, I'd be keen to hear details of where you sourced the reconditioned unit from if you can find them.

I've been quoted £366 (DMF) plus £230 (Clutch) plus £384 (labour) plus VAT for the job, which is over £800. I'm not in a hurry to have it done, but saving some pennies on that cost is something I'm keen to do if it's possible.

Do folks think that's a reasonable quote....?

Cheers

For reference, I was quoted 570 euro for a DMF, 210 euro for a clutch and 400 euro for labour (that may have only been for the clutch though)
